Expert review

The Dillard’s American Express® Card has two versions — a store card and an American Express credit card — both with a $0 annual fee and a rewards program with 2x points on Dillard’s purchases and 1x points on everything else. If you get the American Express card, you also earn 2x points at US gas stations and US supermarkets.

Unfortunately, you don’t get to choose which card to apply for. Instead, there’s one application and based on your creditworthiness, Wells Fargo will determine whether to approve you for the store card or the Amex card.

Another downside is the points redemption. You need a minimum of 1,500 points — $750 spent at Dillard’s — to redeem for a 10% discount pass for one day per billing cycle. This redemption options could prove valuable if you spend a lot at the store; For example, the discount for $750 spent at Dillard’s will equal 5% back.

Because of that, the Dillard’s credit card is only useful if you spend $1,500 or more annually at the store. If you don’t, other reward credit cards are likely a better choice.

How to apply for the Dillard’s American Express® Card?

  1. Visit Dillard’s website and scroll to the bottom of the page.
  2. Click Apply for a Dillard’s credit card.
  3. Click Continue twice.
  4. Enter your phone number and verify your identity by scanning the barcode on the back of your ID card with your smartphone camera.
  5. Submit your application.

What credit score do I need?

To get the American Express version of the credit card, you need a good credit score of 670 or higher. If your score is lower than that, you’ll likely get the store card version.

Dillard’s American Express® Card benefits

  • Earn points. You’ll earn 2x points on Dillard’s purchases and 1x points on everything else. You can also earn 2x points at US gas stations and US supermarkets if you qualify for the American Express version of the card. You can redeem 1,500 of these on a 10% off coupon for a single shopping trip.
  • 0% promotional financing. If you make purchases of $200 or more on Dillard’s men’s tailored clothing and home furnishings, you can get 12 months of promotional 0% APR. For purchases of $2,500 on men’s tailored clothing and home furnishings, you can get 24 months of promotional 0% APR. For any balances remaining after the end of either promo period, you’ll pay a variable APR of 9.99% to 21.74%.
  • No annual fee. You won’t pay an annual fee to use this line of credit.
  • Cell phone protection. This card offers cell phone protection when you use your Dillard’s card to pay your cell phone bill.
  • Dillard’s American Express® Card drawbacks

  • Minimum redemption requirement. You need 1,500 points before you can redeem your rewards.
  • Need to go all in on your redemption. The 10% coupon you earn from your points is naturally best suited for large purchases. For smaller purchases, this is less valuable.

    Bottom line

The Dillard’s American Express® Card is designed for Dillard’s regulars. But to get the most of the card, you need to spend at least $750 annually on the 2x categories. Then you can earn a discount for one day per billing cycle.

But if you think other store cards or rewards cards will be a better choice for you, make sure to compare your options.
