Types of Wells Fargo credit cards

Wells Fargo offers credit cards for just about any goal, whether you’re looking to earn rewards on your spending, transfer balances from higher-interest debt or build a stronger financial history.

Cash back cards

If you’re looking to get cash back on your purchases, Wells Fargo offers the only credit card that gives back rewards in cold, hard cash. Use a Wells Fargo bank ATM to withdraw your rewards in $20 increments.

  • Wells Fargo Cash Back College

Wells Fargo Cash Wise Visa. Get 1.5% cash back on everything you buy, and earn a $200 cash bonus when you spend $1,000 in the first three months after opening your account.

  • Wells Fargo Cash Back College℠ Card. While you hit the books, enjoy a generous 3% for gas, grocery and drugstore purchases — but only in the first six months. After that, rewards revert to 1% on anything you buy.

Rewards cards

All Wells Fargo cards offer 20,000 bonus points, along with other incentives at signup. Use rewards toward airfare, hotels and shopping when you spend in categories.

  • Wells Fargo Visa Signature® Card and Rewards Cards. Spend $1,000 in the first three months for a 20,000 bonus to spend on airfare, hotels, stores and gift cards. • Wells Fargo Propel American Express® Card. Earn 20,000 bonus points for spending $1,000 in the first three months. • Wells Fargo Propel 365 American Express® Card. Spend $3,000 in the first three months to earn a bonus 20,000 points. As for purchases, earn 3x points for filling your tank at gas stations, 2x points for filling your belly at restaurants and 1x points for spending on anything else.

Balance transfer cards

Get your finances in order by transferring balances from high APR cards to a card offering a 0% introductory rate.

  • Wells Fargo Rewards® Card. The best of balance transfer and rewards! Transfer your balances and pay 0% APR on the balance for 15 months before reverting to 18.49% to 27.99% variable , depending on your creditworthiness.

Cards to build or rebuild your credit

If you’re struggling to improve your credit score, look into the flexibility of a secured credit card that reports your responsible spending to the three major credit bureaus.

  • Wells Fargo Secured Credit Card. With this card, your minimum deposit of $300 then becomes your line of credit. You’ll pay a $25 annual fee and 20.99% variable APR on all purchases, but the bank reports your on-time purchases to the three main credit bureaus, boosting your credit score with responsible spending. And you might be eligible to graduate to a Wells Fargo unsecured credit card by staying on top of your payments.
  • Wells Fargo Cash Back College℠ Card. College is an ideal time to build credit — but you’ll want to avoid high APRs and aim to pay off your balance each month. With no annual fee, rewards and a introductory 0% APR for 6 months, this one’s a pretty solid first-time card.
  • Wells Fargo Platinum Card. Keep track of your FICO credit score with the app and enjoy no annual fee and a generous 18 months of 0% APR. Keep up with your monthly payments, and this card can even kick-start your credit score.

The benefits of banking with Wells Fargo

It doesn’t offer the flashiest rewards and best perks out there, but this industry heavyweight makes it easy to track your spending, among other benefits that include:

  • Internet and app banking. Easily view your statement, make payments, manage bills and more.
  • Accepted worldwide. Visa and American Express cards allow you to collect travel benefits anywhere they’re accepted.
  • Fraud protection. Take advantage of zero liability on your purchases for protection against fraud.
  • No annual fee or low annual fees. Most Wells Fargo cards won’t charge you just for keeping the card open.

Wells Fargo recognized awards

Wells Fargo has garnered accolades from around the world, including:

  • World’s Most Valuable Bank by Brand Finance from 2013 to 2016.
  • Top 50 Bank Advisor by Bank Investment Consultant from 2013 to 2016.
  • TFR Excellence in Trade Award for Best Trade Bank in North America in 2016.

What to watch out for

  • Take advantage of rewards. Make sure you understand how to get and redeem points and rewards, especially for any time-sensitive rewards like signup bonuses.
  • Understand fees. While most Wells Fargo cards have no annual fee, you’ll want to make sure there aren’t any unpaid fees.
  • Poor customer service. Many customers report trouble resolving issues or understanding charges to their accounts.

How to apply for a Wells Fargo credit card

To apply for a credit card online, you must be a Wells Fargo customer. Still, it’s easy to sign up for a checking or savings account before you apply for a card.

  • Your driver’s license and Social Security number.

  3. Select the card you’re interested in and apply.

What is Wells Fargo?

What do customers say about Wells Fargo?

Wells Fargo has a Trustpilot score of 2 out of 10, probably due in part to the 2016 scandal involving employees opening new customer accounts without permissions.

Many customers complain of bad or slow customer service, unexplained charges and fees and miscommunication from everything from promotional offers to account services.

Check your statement every month to avoid surprises, and document every interaction with bank tellers and customer support agents.
