Our Editorial Guidelines and Principles | finder.com

finder’s editorial guidelines

Finder.com launched in the US in the fall of 2015 — but that’s not where we began. We were founded in 2008 in Australia, where we quickly became a leading comparison website partly because of our fairness, accuracy and independent analysis.

We’re wired to educate, serve and challenge our readers. And as we extend our international presence, we remain committed to the values and principles that underpin our success as an objective source of information.

Our values

  • We provide countless comparisons and comprehensive information to help consumers make better decisions.
  • We’re driven by values with the goal to become the world’s leading consumer comparison and education site.
  • Our goals rely on the trust of our readers in our objective analysis and accuracy of the content we publish.
  • We’re committed to producing independent, objective and original content that you can’t find anywhere else.
  • Our commitment to these values is sometimes inconvenient — but they’re what makes us us.

Our editorial principles

Everything we do is designed to empower our readers to make decisions. We stand by editorial guidelines that ensure our information is fair, accurate and trustworthy.

Here’s how we apply our values to creating exceptional and engaging content.

We promise to be:

Independence

The news, reviews, comparison results and other content we publish represent our views — and not those of any other company or partner.

Although we may collect money from advertising and affiliate links, we do not sell our opinions or change the way we talk about our advertisers or partners. Neither do we work for or represent the companies whose products and services we compare and analyze.

We may refer our readers to third parties, but we do not sell products or services and have no direct financial interest in the products and services we talk about. This separation is reflected in our site’s terms and conditions, privacy policy and disclaimers.

Sponsors, advertisers and partners do not approve our content or editorial direction.

If any third party requires influence over our content or editorial direction before it signs on as an advertiser or partner, we’ll walk away from the relationship.

We do not publish advertising, advertorials or unreviewed content provided by third parties.

Our editorial team has full control over the content we publish and our editorial priorities.

We may let our partners or advertisers know about content we’re about to publish. But it’s a courtesy — not an obligation.

Objectivity

We educate, serve and challenge our readers in a way that’s consistent with our mission. We strive for fair and objective content that analyzes and reviews topics, products, brands and services. And we work to provide comprehensive, accurate information that empowers our readers to make educated decisions that improve their situation and get decisions made.

We avoid conflicts that could undermine our objectivity or compromise our reputation for honesty and fairness. Where we can’t, we disclose the facts to help our readers make informed decisions.

When we make a mistake, we respond by correcting our errors as soon as we can.

Accuracy

The news, reviews, comparison results and other content we publish represent our educated opinion.

Understanding the value of our reputation, we take all reasonable efforts to ensure that our content is accurate, complete and current when we publish it.

We don’t publish anything without reviewing it first. And when it’s necessary, we ask lawyers and other experts to verify our content.

Originality

Our success is built on original content, and we’re committed to producing comprehensive news, reviews, comparison results and other content that you can’t find anywhere else. We’re proud of what we produce, and we recognize our authors.

Originality — and honesty — are central to our success.

We never knowingly use, reference or incorporate another party’s content without their knowledge and permission.

We respect intellectual property, but we won’t allow partners, advertisers or sponsors to use copyright or trademark law to restrict our readers or influence our content or editorial direction.

Usability

We write our content with our readers in mind. We don’t tell them what to do. We don’t claim to know what’s best. Instead, we empower them to make educated decisions that improve their situation and get decisions made.

Our news, reviews, comparison results and other content are consistent with that mission. So that our readers can fully use our research, we publish clear, accessible and practical content.

We relish the challenge of making complex, complicated ideas both interesting and understandable. Where we fall short, we correct and refine our content so that it’s most helpful.

To help our readers narrow down decisions, we include links in our content to relevant third-party sites. We review these links prior to publishing them to make sure we don’t lead you to offensive or inaccurate information.

If you’re referred to a site or third party, understand that you’ll deal with that party directly when taking advantage of any offer. Carefully read and understand the terms and conditions of any offer before you submit your personal information, sign a contract or click “I agree.”

Information, not advice

We publish tools, calculators, strategies and information that our readers can use to make better — and better informed — decisions. But it’s not possible for us to publish content that’s specifically tailored to your personal circumstances.

We publish information. We do not provide advice.

We never recommend a specific product or strategy as appropriate for your particular needs or situation.

If we think there’s a risk that our content can be misinterpreted as advice, we provide a clear disclaimer and recommend that you seek the advice of a professional or expert.

Accountability

We take responsibility for the content we publish on our site, and we’re accountable for acting consistently with our values and principles. When we make mistakes, we correct them as soon as we can.

If you’re concerned about our published content or feel we aren’t meeting our editorial standards, email us at complaints@finder.com. That way, we can informally investigate the issue and learn more about where we went wrong.
