We highlighted the Amex cards that stood out as prime performers for a given offer.

What’s changed in 2020?

We added Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card to our list this year as it provides a sweet spot of price versus features. While the Amex Gold Card remains the number one travel offer, the Delta Platinum is the perfect runner up and potentially a better choice for Delta fans.

The SimplyCash® Plus Business Credit Card from American Express is now the American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card, with flat-rate cash back and an intro APR on purchases.

How to apply for an American Express card

  1. Visit the American Express website and browse through the issuer’s list of credit cards. At this time, Amex separates its personal and business cards on different pages.
  2. Click on a credit card listing.
  3. Review the details of the card.
  4. When you’re ready to move forward with the card, click Apply now.
  5. Complete the application with information such as your full name, email address, date of birth, Social Security number and total annual income. For a business credit card, enter additional information such as your legal business name, years in business, annual business revenue and federal tax ID.
  6. Review your information and submit your application.

Application restrictions

According to customer reports, Amex allows up to two card applications per day. You can apply for a credit and charge card. Alternatively, you can shoot for two charge cards.

Issuers typically don’t want to see you applying for cards rapid-fire, and Amex is no exception. Consider keeping your credit card applications at three or fewer within 90 days.

How many American Express cards can I have?

According to many customer reports, Amex limits members to five open cards at once. Personal and business cards count toward this number.

There is an exception: charge cards such as The Platinum Card® from American Express and American Express® Gold Card don’t count toward this limit.

Five Amex cards isn’t a hard-and-fast rule — some customers have reported having six or more cards. However, it’s a good guideline.

How to choose the best American Express credit card

Because of the wide range of credit cards offered by American Express, choosing the right one may seem difficult. To this end, here’s what to consider:

  • Annual fee. American Express cards’ annual fees range from $0 to $550. The higher the annual fee, the better perks you get. But this doesn’t mean the no-annual-fee cards aren’t any good. You can get a 0% intro APR period, rewards on your purchases and other benefits even with cards with a $0 annual fee.
  • Rewards. American Express offers the famous Membership rewards program. Within this program, you can redeem your points for a variety of rewards including travel, gift cards and cash back. You can also get a card that only earns cash back, or you can consider a cobranded hotel or airline card where you earn and redeem rewards within the program.
  • Intro APR period. A 0% intro APR period on purchases is a perk typically found in Amex’s cashback cards and other cards with a $0 annual fee. This perk is useful in paying off large purchases over time.
  • Welcome offer. One way to boost your rewards is to earn the welcome offer. Keep in mind, the higher the card’s annual fee, the higher the welcome offer.

Types of American Express cards

American Express has a large stable of credit cards, including some of the best travel and business products on the market. While its cashback selection is narrow, you’ll find cards with attractive rewards.

Cashback

Amex offers just three cashback cards, but all of them are excellent picks. Consider the American Express Cash Magnet® Card if you want simple, flat-rate cash back on all spending. Look into the Blue Cash products if you want tiered cash back on everyday purchases.

Typical benefits
  • Relatively low annual fees. Two of Amex’s cashback cards have no annual fees. The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express has a $95 annual fee starting the second year.
  • Cash back on everyday purchases. The American Express Cash Magnet® Card offers flat-rate cash back on all purchases. Meanwhile, the Blue Cash products offer good cash back at US supermarkets and US gas stations.
  • Light welcome-offer requirements. Score a solid haul of cash back early on by meeting a relatively low spending requirement within the welcome offer timeframe.
  • Decent intro APRs. With all of Amex’s cashback cards, you’ll find decent intro APRs on purchases.

  • American Express Cash Magnet® Card
  • Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express

Balance transfer and 0% intro APR

Amex doesn’t offer powerhouse 0% intro APR cards, but you’ll find decent promotional interest rates on attractive rewards products.

Typical benefits
  • Decent intro APR length. You’ll find intro APRs of 12 to 15 months.
  • Intro APRs on purchases. On cards that have this benefit, you’ll get 0% intro APRs on purchases during the intro period.
  • Everyday rewards. All of Amex’s intro APR cards have good rewards on everyday purchases. Most of them offer bonus rewards at US supermarkets and US gas stations.
  • Relatively low annual fees. The highest annual fee you’ll find is $95.
  • Light welcome-offer requirements. You typically don’t have to spend too much to qualify for the welcome offer.

Travel/Membership Rewards points

Pick one of Amex’s first-party travel cards if you want to earn Membership Rewards points. These points are especially valuable if you want to transfer them to select airline and hotel partners.

Typical benefits
  • Membership Rewards points. You can redeem these for a variety of options, including gift cards, merchandise, purchases at some major retailers, travel and more. You’ll find the highest value, however, by transferring your points to airline and hotel partners.
  • Credits. Amex’s charge cards — American Express® Green Card, American Express® Gold Card and The Platinum Card® from American Express — all include credits that can help you offset your product’s annual fee.
  • Points in a variety of categories. These cards offer bonus rewards in different categories — not always travel. That said, consider where you typically spend and whether your purchases can help you earn accelerated rewards.
  • Higher-value welcome offers. While you can potentially score more points, you may need to meet higher spending requirements.

Airline and hotel

Amex is a major partner of Delta and Hilton. While it’s not the exclusive issuer of Marriott Bonvoy cards, it offers arguably the best product for this hotel program.

Typical benefits
  • Program-specific rewards. Depending on the program, you’ll earn Delta SkyMiles, Hilton Honors points or Marriott Bonvoy points.
  • Program-specific benefits. Delta cards might offer inflight savings, free checked baggage, companion certificates, lounge access and more depending on which product you choose. The hotel cards all offer elite status upgrades and, depending on annual fee, might offer perks such as free nights, statement credits, lounge access and Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credits.
  • Welcome offers. Typically, you’ll find bigger welcome offers with cards that have higher annual fees.

No annual fee

There are different types of no-annual-fee cards in Amex’s collection. Consider whether you want a cobranded airline or hotel card, and can also think about what type of bonus rewards you’re looking for.

Typical benefits
  • Rewards. While these certainly aren’t the most valuable cards, most of them pay respectable rewards — typically on everyday purchases. The Hilton Honors American Express Card offers a strong rewards rate on Hilton purchases.
  • Light welcome-offer requirements. With most cards, you must spend only $500 or $1,000 within the first three months of account opening to qualify for the welcome offer. The Blue from American Express® Card doesn’t have a welcome offer.
  • Basic features for cobranded cards. The Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card offers 20% back on inflight Delta purchases. The Hilton Honors Card offers complimentary Silver status in Hilton Honors.

The vast majority of Amex’s travel cards have no foreign transaction fees. However, notable exceptions are the Amex Everyday products.

Typical benefits
  • Higher welcome offers. Travel cards — many of which have no foreign transaction fees — tend to have attractive welcome offers. Even the no-annual-fee Hilton Honors American Express Card has a healthy offer for its price.
  • Travel rewards. You can earn Membership Rewards points with Amex’s first-party cards. Alternatively, earn miles in Delta SkyMiles or points in Hilton Honors or Marriott Bonvoy.
  • Credits. Some of Amex’s travel cards offer credits that help you offset your annual fee. The American Express® Gold Card offers up to $120 per calendar year in dining credits.

Amex’s business charge cards are standouts among competitors. Additionally, the issuer offers several excellent cobranded cards, including the Amazon and Delta products as well as cobranded hotel products.

Typical benefits
  • Travel rewards. A few of Amex’s business cards offer Membership Rewards points. The issuer’s cobranded airline and hotel cards offer rewards for their specific programs.
  • Cash back. If you don’t want to deal with travel rewards, consider cashback cards such as the American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card and The Plum Card® from American Express.
  • Welcome offers. Most cards have attractive welcome offers. However, some products that you might expect to have offers — such as The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express — are missing this feature.
  • Additional features. The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express offers a top-notch array of travel benefits. Amex’s cobranded airline and hotel cards have attractive features of their own.

Alternatives to American Express credit cards

Although American Express offers a wide variety of credit cards, it’s not the only card provider. Other providers that rival American Express are:

  • Chase. Chase offers some of the best travel credit cards with the Chase Ultimate Rewards program. And since most of the cards are Visa cards, you shouldn’t have any problem using them abroad.
  • Citi. Citi also offers some of the best travel credit cards with the ThankYou rewards program. But you’ll also find market-leading 0% intro APR periods on balance transfers with the Citi® Diamond Preferred® Card and Citi Simplicity® Card.
  • Bank of America. Bank of America is famous for a wide range of cobranded airline and cruise line credit cards. But it also offers some of the best student cards — Bank of America® Cash Rewards for Students and Bank of America Travel Rewards card for students.
  • Barclaycard US. Barclaycard offers a massive selection of travel credit cards. You can find cobranded cards for cruise lines, homestays and hotels, and airline credit cards.

How does American Express keep my credit card information secure?

American Express protects your personal and financial information with physical and technical features. It encrypts any sensitive information you send online, and accounts left logged in and idle time out for your protection.

Fraud protection is also available. Account alerts and irregular or suspicious transaction monitoring keeps you informed and your account under watch. Amex may also verify your identity before allowing you to make a purchase, confirming you’re actually the one using the card.

You can also choose whether to receive American Express marketing materials and how you’d like to get them. You’re still able to access customer service agents and receive contact regarding your account, when necessary.
