SoFi Invest is great for beginners

SoFi Invest is designed with beginners and passive investors in mind, providing financial advice coupled with low-cost, uncomplicated access to the market. Its mobile app is straightforward to navigate, investing is effortless and SoFi support is a live chat away for any help.

Meanwhile, beginners can automate their investing with SoFi’s robo-advisor for a 0.25% annual fee and get financial and investment advice from SoFi’s team of credentialed financial planners.

Latest SoFi Invest updates

July 15, 2025: SoFi reintroduced its IRA match program.

May 28, 2024: SoFi relaunched its 1% IRA match on all contributions via ACH.

May 14, 2024: SoFi announced a partnership with Templum, a fintech company that provides access to alternative assets, to increase customers’ access to alternative investments.

What I like about SoFi Invest

SoFi Invest offers several standout features, including low trading costs, IPO investing, access to alternative assets and access to human and robo-advisory services.

SoFi Plus

SoFi Invest offers access to upgraded perks for a $10 monthly fee.

SoFi Plus investing-related features include:

  • SoFi Bank savings APY. Earn up to 3.60% APY as a Plus member, or with eligible direct deposit or $5,000 or more in qualifying deposits during the 31-day evaluation period. SoFi’s cash sweep yield is low, so this is a valuable perk.
  • One-on-one financial planning through SoFi Wealth. Get financial planning sessions with SoFi’s Certified Financial Planners, the gold standard in financial planning. Non-Plus members get one complimentary 30-minute session.
  • 1% match on recurring Invest deposits. Get an unlimited 1% match on recurring deposits to SoFI Invest, paid in rewards points.

Low trading costs

Trade stocks, options and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) with zero commissions with SoFi Invest. What’s more, SoFi’s one of just a handful of brokers we review that doesn’t charge per-contract fees for options. Many brokers charge 65 cents on each side to open and close an options contract.

Access to advisory services

Hands-off investors will appreciate SoFi’s robo-advisor for a 0.25% management fee, while all investors can benefit from its access to its team of credentialed financial planners. All SoFi customers get a 30 minute planning session, or access to one-on-one financial planning when you upgrade to SoFi Plus.

SoFi’s also expanding its educational content with an upcoming financial literacy educational guide as part of its new philanthropic Generational Wealth Fund initiative. SoFi’s donating $1 million to help spread financial literacy and $500K to birthFUND to cover maternal healthcare costs for families in need.(2)(3)

Participate in IPOs

SoFi’s also one of just a handful of brokers we review that offers access to initial public offerings (IPOs) before they trade on exchanges. Not every IPO is available on SoFi — only those in which SoFi is an underwriter make it on the platform. Still, previous IPOs include Instacart and Reddit.

Diversify with alternative assets

SoFi’s launch of alternative asset funds means customers can now diversify their portfolios beyond traditional investments like stocks, options, ETFs and mutual funds. Trade interval funds that include commodities, private credit, real estate and more in your brokerage account or IRA. Available funds include:

  • ARK Invest, ARK Venture Fund
  • Carlyle, Carlyle Tactical Private Credit Fund
  • KKR, KKR Credit Opportunities Portfolio
  • Clarion Partners, Clarion Partners Real Estate Income Fund
  • Franklin Templeton, Franklin BSP Private Credit Fund

Beginner-friendly investing platform

Between its user-friendly interface, educational resources and zero commissions trading, SoFi Invest is among the most beginner-friendly platforms out there.

These are some of the tools you’ll be able to view and use through SoFi:

  • SoFi’s IPO investing feature
  • Market comparison
  • Stock watchlist
  • Collections of theme-based investments
  • SoFi’s Popular Investors, which are the most-followed investors on the platform
  • Popular and trending stocks
  • A list of SoFi’s fund family ETFs
  • SoFi Learn

The Invest home screen is packed with a ton of valuable information, but it doesn’t feel overcrowded. Here, you’ll find your portfolio balance and options to add cash, transfer investments and search for assets. You’ll also find a list of your current accounts and the option to add a new account, like automated investing.

Where SoFi Invest falls short

SoFi’s investment options and research tools are limited, especially when compared to more complex platforms like Charles Schwab or E*TRADE. No advanced charts or analyst price targets or ratings, and little by way of company metrics. Investors looking to conduct fundamental or technical analysis may not be satisfied with SoFi’s simpler approach to investing.

Plus, SoFi’s robo-advisor lacks an automated tax-loss harvesting strategy like that offered by some other competitor robo-advisors to help lower investors’ tax liability on investment gains. Its cash sweep rate at 0.02% APY is also low.

Is SoFi legit?

Yes, SoFi is a legitimate company and broker. Founded in 2011, SoFi today has over 4 million members. It’s funded more than $50 billion in loans and also received regulatory approval in early 2022 to become a national bank. SoFi’s now the official banking partner of the NBA. As a member of the SIPC, customer accounts are secured up to $500,000, including a $250,000 limit for cash claims, in the event of SoFi’s insolvency.

In terms of security, SoFi’s platform is considered safe and secure. SoFi employs two-factor authentication and 24/7 account monitoring, and its systems and security controls are regularly reviewed by third parties against security standards such as SSAE18 SOC2 and PCI DSS. SoFi also notes that “rigorous third-party penetration testing” is done at least annually.

While there are no customer reviews across the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and Trustpilot that specifically call out SoFi Invest, SoFi has mixed reviews across these two review providers. It’s not accredited by the BBB, meaning that they don’t meet, commit to and maintain the BBB’s accreditation standards, but it does hold an A+ rating. Reviews on the BBB are largely negative. However, scores highly among Trustpilot reviewers. Frequent complaints revolve around loan approval issues, a lack of customer support and inactivity fees for its investing account. Satisfied customers praise SoFi’s prompt customer service and easy loan application process.

Many reviews across both sites praise SoFi’s reliability, ease of use and customer service. However, some negative reviews mention issues with account access, loan processing times and occasional technical glitches.

SoFi Plus members are eligible for a 1% match on recurring deposits received into a SoFi InvestⓇ account. For complete SoFi Plus eligibility, please see the SoFi Plus terms. Members can only earn the 1% match for periods in which a recurring deposit is received into a SoFi InvestⓇ account and the member meets the SoFi Plus eligibility criteria. "Recurring deposits" refer to ACH transfers scheduled with a frequency of weekly, every two weeks, or monthly into either an Active SoFi InvestⓇ account or a SoFi Wealth Automated Investing account. Regular deposits set up from a SoFi Checking & Savings account using Autopilot are eligible for the bonus. One-time transfers are excluded from the bonus. If funds are withdrawn and later redeposited manually into the SoFi InvestⓇ account, the manual deposit will not be eligible for the bonus. Offer can be combined with SoFi Invest 1% IRA match. Funds must remain in the SoFi InvestⓇ account for two years to be eligible for the bonus. If the deposit is removed prior to the end of the two-year Eligibility Period, SoFi, at its discretion may remove the corresponding proportion of the 1% Match from the member’s account. For instance, if $1,000 was deposited receiving a $10 rewards points match and $500 was withdrawn in a subsequent month, SoFi may remove $5 in rewards points from the bonus. SoFi reserves the right to liquidate securities to pay for the removal of the Match bonus. Further, SoFi may bill this to a receiving firm in the event of an account transfer. Bonus amounts are calculated on the total net recurring inflows (incoming recurring ACH transfers less outgoing transfers) per calendar month. For example, if a member has a recurring Invest deposit of $1,000 on 11/4/2024 and withdraws $500 on 11/15/2024 and makes no other deposits or withdrawals to their SoFi InvestⓇ account for the month, they will earn 500 rewards points, equal to 1% of $500 net monthly inflows. If a member loses SoFi Plus eligibility at any point throughout the month, they will earn the 1% match only on recurring deposits received while they were a SoFi Plus member. All withdrawals in the calendar month (regardless of Plus status) will count against the bonus. For example, if a member has a recurring Invest deposit of $1,000 on 11/4/2024 as a SoFi Plus member, loses SoFi Plus status on 11/10/2024, and has another recurring Invest deposit of $1,000 on 11/12/2024, they would earn $10 in rewards points (1% of the $1,000 that was deposited while they were a SoFi Plus member). Bonuses will be paid out as rewards points within two weeks of the end of the calendar month. Members must enroll in SoFi Member Rewards to redeem rewards points, but not to be eligible for the bonus. Rewards points are subject to the SoFi Member Rewards terms. Bonus will not be paid out on SoFi InvestⓇ or SoFi Wealth accounts that are closed or pending closure.
