How many American Express cards can you have?
Typically, five. But you may be able to grab more.
American Express credit card limitation rules
American Express typically limits the number of cards you can have to five. This limit applies to your combined personal and business cards. If you have two personal cards and three business cards, for example, you may have reached the cap.
However, this isn’t an official rule. In some cases, you could have more than five cards.
Exceptions to Amex card limitations
Cards such as The Platinum Card® from American Express and American Express® Gold Card — don’t count toward the five-card limit.
Some cardholders have reported having six or seven Amex cards. You may increase your chances of getting these maximums with an excellent credit score, high income and extensive history as an Amex customer. As with many of these types of situations, your mileage may vary.
If you apply for a card and are denied due to reaching the cap, call Amex customer support and ask the representative what your options are.
Finder Tip: Pair American Express credit cards
If you already have an Amex card and want another one, note that some cards pair especially well with others. The most popular and rewarding combination is the Amex trifecta. Other combinations include:
- Amex Platinum Card and Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card.
The Amex Platinum Card offers 5x Membership Rewards points on eligible flights and hotels, but only 1x points on other purchases. That’s where the Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card comes in, offering 3x bonus points at US supermarkets and US gas stations — two of the most common everyday categories. For the highest value, combine rewards from both cards and transfer them to partner airlines.
- Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card and American Express® Green Card.
The American Express® Green Card fills the gaps in the Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card‘s rewards, offering accelerated rewards on eligible travel and dining.
- Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express and American Express Cash Magnet® Card.
If you don’t want to pay high annual fees, these two cards are a strong combo. The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express offers accelerated cash back at US supermarkets and US gas stations. Outside of those categories, use the Amex Cash Magnet to earn a solid 1.5% cash back on all purchases.

Managing multiple American Express cards
Certain American Express cards synergize well, giving you an opportunity to extract impressive value. At the same time, any extra benefits could be erased if you manage your cards poorly.
At a minimum, always make your card payments on time. If you think you might forget, set up automatic payments. Consider changing your statement due dates to make it easier to pay off multiple cards around the same date.
For more tips, read our guide on managing multiple credit cards.
Some Amex members have had luck getting six or seven cards, but five is the standard maximum. If you’re denied a card because you’ve reached the limit, call Amex support and ask about your options.
American Express cards often work well together — especially those that offer Membership Rewards points. Consider multiple Amex credit cards and see if any of them fit your needs.
