These 50 car insurance groups were created by Thatcham Research to help insurers calculate how much they should charge motorists for their specific car. Before being made available to buy, all vehicles are assigned an insurance group from 1 (cheapest to insure) to 50 (most expensive).

The group a particular vehicle is assigned to depends on a variety of factors including its overall performance, safety and security features and its market value.

A car’s insurance group isn’t the only factor that determines the price of a car insurance premium. Insurers also consider a number of factors surrounding the car owner, including their age, driving history and location.

• 14P: Provisional status. Insufficient data is available at launch for classification. This will likely be updated once Thatcham can evaluate the new car.
• 14G: Grey import. Thatcham tests only officially sold UK cars, so imports are evaluated based on the insurer’s pricing.

The average 20-year-old driver in London could pay £4,245 for the BMW 1-Series 114d ES (Business Media) 3d, while the average 40-year-old Londoner will only pay £845.

How to save money on your car insurance premium

If you would like to save money on your car insurance, choosing a car in insurance group 14 (or lower) is a great start.

Here are some more steps you can take to reduce your car insurance premium:

• Avoid any driving convictions. If you have registered any driving or criminal convictions recently, this will make your premium more expensive.
• Be economical about your car usage. Insurers will always ask for your annual mileage when you apply for insurance. You could save money if you reduce yours. However, if you go over the figure that you tell your insurer, it could invalidate your policy. So, consider opting for public transport or walking whenever you can to keep your mileage down.
• Pay annually rather than monthly. This eliminates the possibility of having to pay interest on monthly instalments.
• Install extra safety precautions. This reduces the risk of you making a large claim. This makes you less of a risk to insurers and will usually result in them lowering your premium.
