All vehicles are assigned an insurance group from 1 (cheapest) to 50 (most expensive) before they are made available.

The groups are used to help insurers determine the cost of your premium. The group a particular type of car fits into is based on the perceived risk of an insurer paying out a lot of money. The factors considered include a car’s performance, the cost of parts replacement, and its safety and security features.

These aren’t the only factors used to determine your premium. Personal factors such as your age, location and driving history all play a significant part too.

Still, the car insurance group that your car slots into plays a key role.

• 11P: Provisional status. Insufficient data is available at launch for classification. This will likely be updated once Thatcham can evaluate the new car.

Which other factors affect your car insurance premium?

Along with the insurance group of your vehicle, these three factors will also have a huge impact on the cost of your insurance:

• The car’s engine. The size, type and capacity of your engine will definitely be considered. The larger and more powerful your engine, the more you’re likely to pay for insurance. This is because larger engines cost more and take longer to repair.
• Your location. Insurers will consider where you live and where you park your car at night. They will use this data to estimate the likelihood of your car being damaged or stolen when you’re not using it, based on previous claims data. As an example, a 30-year-old in central London will pay £933 for insurance for a Toyota Yaris 1.5 VVT-i Hybrid Sport (Nav) 5d CVT Auto, while the same 30-year-old in Newcastle may only pay £692.
• Your age. Insurers will also use your age to determine the likelihood of you making a claim, based on previous claims data. This can have a huge impact on your premium. For example, the average 20-year-old driver in London could pay £3,275 for the Hyundai i30 SE Nav 1.6 CRDi 110PS DCT auto 5d, while the average 40-year-old Londoner will only pay £816.

How can I save on my car insurance premium?

You can reduce the price of car insurance premium by choosing a car in insurance group 11 or lower. Here are some more things you can do:

• Shop around for the best deal. It pays off to shop around for the cheapest car insurance quote every year. More often than not, you’ll save money by switching providers.
• Be economical about your car usage. You’ll often be offered a lower premium if you’re more sparing with your car usage. So, consider if there are car journeys you can avoid by opting for public transport or walking instead.
• Install extra safety precautions. The more safety precautions you add to your car, the better your premium will be. Any feature that makes your vehicle more secure and less of a risk to insurers will be reflected in the price of your premium.
• Pay annually rather than monthly. By doing so, you avoid the possibility of paying interest on monthly payments.
• Avoid any driving convictions. It may sound obvious, but having driving convictions (or criminal convictions) on your record will make your premium more expensive.
