What is insurance group 7?

There are 50 insurance “groups” that have been created to help car insurance companies set reasonable premiums. These groups are based on how costly it should be to insure a vehicle, from group 1 (cheapest) to group 50 (most expensive).

A number of factors are considered, including a car’s performance, safety features, security features and the cost of replacing parts.

Cars in insurance group 7 are among the cheapest to insure, although those in 1-6 will be cheaper to cover. The cars in this group are likely to possess less powerful engines and be inexpensive to repair in general.

• 7E: Surpasses the security requirements for this type of car, leading to a lower insurance group rating.
• 7A: Meets the standard security requirements for this type of car.
• 7D: Falls short of security requirements for this type of car, resulting in a higher insurance group rating.
• 7U: Security standard is unacceptable. The insurer might require upgraded aftermarket security before providing coverage.
• 7P: Provisional status. Insufficient data is available at launch for classification. This will likely be updated once Thatcham can evaluate the new car.
• 7G: Grey import. Thatcham tests only officially sold UK cars, so imports are evaluated based on the insurer’s pricing.

Why are cars in group 7 one of the cheapest?

The main reason that cars in insurance group 7 are cheap to insure is that they score well for the following factors:

• It’s cheap to source parts and make repairs
• The cars have low market value
• Smaller engines
• Quick repair times

Which other factors affect your car insurance premium?

Here are some other key factors that impact your car insurance:

• Engine type and capacity. The larger your engine, the more you’ll probably pay to insure your car. With a smaller engine, you’ll be perceived as a lower risk to insurers. In most cases, they’ll reflect this lower risk by offering a lower premium.
• Driver location. Your location is used to estimate the likelihood of your car being stolen or involved in an accident. For example, a 30-year-old in central London will pay £901 for insurance for a Citroen C1 1.0i Platinum 3d, while the same 30-year-old in Newcastle may only pay £689.
• Driver age. The age of the driver also plays a big role in determining the cost of your insurance premium. This is because the youngest and oldest drivers are statistically more likely to make car insurance claims. The average 20-year-old driver in London could pay £3,289 for the Nissan Note 1.2 N-Tec 5d, while the average 40-year-old Londoner will only pay £805.

• Marital status
• Your occupation and credit history
• The likelihood of theft based on the car and your area
• The age of your car
• Your driving history and driving activity
• Your no claims discount

How can I save on my car insurance premiums?

Choosing a cheap car, such as those listed in insurance group 7, is a clever way to reduce the cost of your car insurance premium.

Here are some other things you can do to reduce your car insurance premium:

• Avoid driving convictions. Any convictions on your record will make your premium more expensive.
• Be economical about your car usage. The fewer miles you drive, the more your premium could drop. This is because you’re less likely to claim if your car usage is low.
• Pay annually rather than monthly. By paying annually, you won’t be charged monthly interest on your premium.
• Install extra safety precautions. The safer your car, the lower the risk put on the insurer.
• Don’t just accept your renewal quote. When it’s time to renew your car insurance policy, always shop around. In most cases, you could save a lot by assessing your options.
