Whether you’re going clubbing in Ibiza or you’re taking a cruise around the world, travel insurance is always a good idea.

However, each insurance company has several types of policies on offer, but there will be one that’s most suited to your trip. So you’re going to have to sit down and have a think about which insurance deal is suited for you.

Thankfully, this guide has made your job a bit easier, showing you all the various options Spectrum has to offer and explaining the key features of each.

What is Spectrum?

Spectrum is a division of City Holdings Limited and has been trading for over 30 years. It says it aims to deal with customers’ claims “quickly, fairly and efficiently”.

What are my cover options with Spectrum?

Spectrum offers several types of travel insurance cover. They are listed below with a selection of their features:

Heading to the beach this summer or hitting the slopes? Whatever the case, if you’re doing just the one holiday this year, you’ll probably want single-trip insurance. Spectrum’s Single Trip policy has the following key features:

  • The maximum number of days for a trip is 100 days for people aged under 75 and 31 days for persons aged 76 and over. With the most basic level of cover (bronze), the limit is 31 days for anyone aged up to 85.
  • To go to countries with expensive healthcare systems like the United States, you have to pay more, plus you can’t go to places the Government Foreign Office has advised against.
  • Get cover for up to £10 million for emergency medical fees should you fall ill or have an injury while away.
  • Get access to a 24/7 medical emergency helpline.
Going away more than once this year? You could well save time and money by taking out an Annual cover policy. Otherwise known as multi-trip insurance, it will cover you for each of the trips you take. Key features of Spectrum’s Annual policy include the following:

  • Get cover for up to 100 consecutive days abroad if you’re 65 or under.
  • Get cover for up to 50 consecutive days if between the ages of 66 and 75.
  • Anyone aged between 76 and 85 can only get protection for a maximum of 35 consecutive days abroad.
  • Get access to a 24/7 medical emergency helpline.

Setting sail from the UK for a few months for your big adventure around the world? Also known as gap-year insurance, this type of cover is ideal for anyone who is going travelling, and is specifically tailored to the backpacker experience. Find out what Spectrum will or won’t cover you for here:

  • There is an age limit of 46 years old.
  • The maximum time away is 18 months.
  • You can temporarily return home once, but for no longer than 14 days.
  • Get up to £7,500,000 for emergency medical expenses.

Heading to play golf on your next trip abroad? Many insurers offer golf cover as an optional extra, which you buy alongside your main travel insurance deal. It could save you a fair bit of cash should anything happen to you or your equipment. Here are the key features of Spectrum’s golf cover:

  • Get cover for your clubs, bags and trolley against theft.
  • Hole-in-one cover will help you pay for celebrations.
  • Personal liability will help should you hit and injure someone while on the course.
  • It will pay if you have to hire golf equipment because yours has gone missing.
  • It will pay you for any non-refundable green fees if you have to cancel your trip due to unforeseen circumstances, such as adverse weather conditions.

Setting sail on a luxury cruise this year? Like with all trips, things can go wrong, from literally missing the boat to having your stuff stolen. Cruise cover is an optional insurance you can buy on top of your main policy, which could offer you the added protection you need. Here’s what to expect with Spectrum’s Cruise policy:

  • Should you be unable to dock at a port due to poor weather or timetable restrictions, you’ll be compensated.
  • You’ll be compensated for each day you are confined to your cabin for medical reasons.
  • You’ll be reimbursed if you can’t do an excursion that you had booked and prepaid for because you’re injured or ill.
  • Should you miss your cruise due to transport breaking down or being delayed, you’ll get help with accommodation and onward travel.

Hitting the slopes this year? Skiing and other winter sports come with risks, but by getting a winter sports policy, you can make sure you’ll be covered should an accident or serious injury happen. You’ll have to get this as an additional level of coverage with Spectrum on top of your standard travel insurance policy. Key features include the following:

  • Get cover for any injuries.
  • Get cover for your ski equipment if it is stolen or damaged, and it will help you hire replacement gear.
  • Get cover for the piste being closed due to adverse weather.
  • Get cover for a lost lift pass.

Standard travel insurance policies often won’t cover you for going further afield. The US and the Caribbean are often deemed to be too expensive for insurers, so you’ll have to pay more for worldwide cover. With Spectrum, the policy includes the following:

  • Get emergency evacuation or “repatriation” if you need it.
  • Cover will save you from having to pay hefty medical fees.

If you have a pre-existing medical condition, you may find it harder to get coverage, but there are insurers that will cover you. With Spectrum, you’ll need to outline whether you’re waiting to see a doctor about a suspected problem or if you’ve been diagnosed and treated for a condition. Should Spectrum agree to cover your pre-existing health issue, here are some key features of its medical insurance:

  • It will foot most of your medical bill should you fall ill abroad.
  • It will repatriate you should you need to get back to the UK for treatment.
  • It will pay for emergency replenishment of prescription medication if you are stuck in a country.
  • Unless approved by the insurer, you can only use public or state-run health facilities while abroad.
Popping off on a family trip? Getting a policy which covers the whole clan will save you a whole load of hassle, saving you the time of taking out individual policies. Spectrum’s plan includes the following:

  • Get protection for any children under the age of 18 with a family or single parent family policy.
  • Get up to £10m of emergency medical cover should someone fall ill or injure themselves.
  • Get access to a 24/7 emergency medical helpline.
  • Should you miss your departure due to transport breaking down, poor weather or industrial action, it will pay for additional accommodation and onward travel.

    How much is my excess?

    Your insurance excess is the amount you’re expected to pay towards a claim before the insurer starts contributing.

    How much you have to pay in excess will depend on the claim you make, so check your policy handbook to see how much you’re going to have to pay for a certain holiday claim.

    What’s the claims process for Spectrum?

    Should you be taken ill or injure yourself abroad, you can use the 24/7 emergency medical helpline on + 44 (0) 203 824 0713.

    You’ll need to provide your personal details, information about your doctor and the place you’re getting treated, and the contact and address info for your doctor in the UK.

    If it’s not a medical emergency, you should call 0203 824 0714 or head to www.travel-claims.net.

    You need to file the claim within 31 days of returning by completing the claim form, which you get this after calling the number above or using the website.

    Each claim will require you to send different sorts of documentation. However, you should be prepared to provide the following:

    1. Your insurance validation document and insurance policy number
    2. A detailed written statement about the claimable incident
    3. Any photos you have (if applicable)
    4. Medical certificates and information (if applicable)
    5. Police reports (if applicable)
