Santander Edge Explorer review: Is it worth it?

  • Kate Steere's headshot

Our verdict

Explore the world with the newest member of the Santander Edge family.

Santander Edge Explorer is the full package, with 4 insurance benefits, cashback and fee-free spending abroad. If you’ve got a busy family life, Edge Explorer is designed to plug the gap and sort things like travel insurance and breakdown cover for you. Plus, you can potentially earn £20 in cashback a month. However, Edge Explorer carries a £17 monthly fee, so you should make sure that the insurance benefits and cashback outweigh that. It’s always best to check that the insurance cover on offer suits your circumstances and if it’s worth the money. If you’re interested in seeing what else Santander has to offer, compare other Santander accounts here. You can also take a look at other current accounts with cashback offers.

It also has fee-free spending abroad and access to the Edge Saver. In return, you’ll need to pay a £17 monthly fee to maintain the account.

You can open the account individually or jointly, but you’re only allowed one account per person, meaning you can’t have an individual account and a joint account.

How does it work?

The Santander Edge Explorer has the following key features:

  • Travel insurance. With the account, you get worldwide family travel insurance.
  • Breakdown cover. UK and EU breakdown cover, including if you are a passenger.
  • Mobile phone insurance. Family mobile phone insurance including up to 4 devices.
  • GP Services. 24/7 remote GP access.
  • Cashback. Earn 1% cashback on selected household bills when you pay by direct debit (up to £10 a month) and earn 1% cashback at supermarkets and on travel costs when you use your debit card (up to £10 a month).
  • Zero foreign transaction fees. There are no fees for using your debit card to withdraw cash or make payments outside the UK in the local currency.
  • Access to the Edge Saver. As an Edge account holder, you’ll get access to the Edge Saver account 6% AER.

Who is it for?

To open the Santander Edge Explorer account, you’ll need to be at least 18 years old and permanently live in the UK. You can only hold 1 Santander Edge Explorer current account, either 1 in your own name or 1 in joint names.
