How do Virgin Money credit cards work?

Virgin Money offers a variety of different credit cards which includes balance transfer deals, 0% purchase deals, 0% money transfer cards, and Virgin Atlantic reward cards.

But the card issuer also tailors rates and offers to the applicant, and won’t reveal its cards until you’ve used its “Card Checker”, which involves handing over personal data.

Types of credit cards from Virgin Money

Virgin Money has a range of credit cards to suit different financial requirements and a variety of purposes, with reasonable interest rates and charges. If you take out a Virgin Atlantic credit card you can also build up Virgin Points to spend on flights or upgrades.

  • Balance transfer credit cards

These deals let you move existing credit card debt to a new card to pay less interest. Virgin Money offers a number of 0% balance transfer deals – going head-to-head with the likes of Barclaycard and mbna.

  • Money transfer credit cards

These allow you to transfer money from a low rate credit card into your current account, for example to pay off an expensive overdraft or to withdraw cash. Virgin Money offers one of the best 0% interest on money transfer deals on the market.

  • All-rounders

If you’re looking for a credit card for multiple financial purposes, Virgin Money should be on your shortlist. Some of its cards can offer 0% on purchases, balance transfers and money transfers plus a variety of rewards. Just watch out for the transfer fees.

  • Frequent flyer credit cards

Virgin Atlantic credit cards are suitable for those that fly regularly and want to build up loyalty points through everyday spending. These Virgin Points can then be converted to flights or upgrades. The Virgin Atlantic cards compete alongside the British Airways American Express cards.

With a Virgin Money credit card you also gain access to cashback and reward offers.

Virgin credit card rewards

Although only some Virgin Money credit cards are specifically designed for collecting points, they all give you access to the following benefits:

What is Virgin Money Cashback?

It’s a cashback scheme that you can access through the Virgin Money website once you have a Virgin credit card. The card issuer has partnered with more than 500 brands – from household names to, well… not-household names – in sectors from electronics and clothes through to eating out and groceries.

You can see the cashback offers in the app and once registered, all you’ll need to do is spend at the relevant retailers and you will earn cashback automatically.

The cashback can be added to your credit card account as a credit in around 3 to 5 working days. Or you can trade up and exchange your cashback for e-gift cards to use at selected retailers online or in store.

What is Virgin Red?

It’s a second android/iphone app (in other words it’s not the primary app that you’ll use to track your Virgin credit card account) that you can use to access exclusive discounts and offers. Virgin Red is a points scheme that lets you earn Virgin Points every time you spend. You can then spend your points on a range of rewards, whether that’s flights, a case of wine or days out with the family.

You can monitor your balance in the app and you’ll also be able to view the vouchers you’ve purchased. To use a voucher in person, take your phone to the retailer, show the code or QR code and collect the treat you’ve redeemed.

Expert analysis: Cashback deals could be a big payday

It’s worth having a look through the large list of retailers that offer cashback when you use your Virgin Money credit card to shop with them. Although the list of eligible retailers can change, there are lots of recurring brands, including Wowcher, Lego, National Express, Krispy Kreme, Enterprise Rent-A-Car and many more.

And the beauty of it is, you can combine your credit card spending cashback with other voucher codes and cashback offerings from websites and apps such as TopCashback, Quidco and Airtime Rewards. As an example, Laithwaites Wine can be found on all of these platforms, and these rewards can be combined at the same time - giving you 20% back with Virgin Money credit card cashback, 10% back with Airtime Rewards and 8.4% back with TopCashback. It can really pay off if you stack these deals.

Just make sure you remember to redeem your Virgin Money cashback. It will sit in your cashback wallet until you decide to claim it. You can choose to put the money towards your credit card bill, or you can earn an extra bonus by trading up for a gift card to spend at selected retailers.

How to apply for a Virgin Money credit card

Applying online for a Virgin Money credit card via the Virgin Money website is a simple and quick process – you can find out if you’re eligible in minutes. You simply select what kind of card you want to apply for and then fill out the online form. You’ll need to provide some basic information, such as your age, status and financial background. Virgin Money will then assess if you are eligible and this won’t affect your credit score. If you’re accepted, you can go ahead and apply in full.

Eligibility requirements

In general there are basic eligibility requirements you will most likely need to meet to be accepted for a Virgin Money credit card. The eligibility requirements are as follows:

  • You are 18 years or older
  • You are a UK resident
  • You have a UK bank or building society account
  • You have a good credit history
  • You have an income of £7,000 or household income of £15,000
Why might you not be approved?

It’s important to note that you will not be approved for a credit card if you are bankrupt or in an individual voluntary arrangement (IVA). You are also unlikely to be approved if you have a county court judgment or a history of defaults, or if you don’t have a credit history.
