High-street retailer Argos sells thousands of products both online and in its physical stores: the chances of finding something you like in that seemingly endless catalogue are pretty good.

If you have an expensive project or purchase in mind and Argos is your shop of choice, you may be able to get yourself some credit without passing through a bank first, thanks to the Argos Card and credit plans. There’s no annual fee and you’ll be able to get interest-free periods of different lengths depending on what you buy and how much you spend.

However, this isn’t a credit card in the traditional sense of the term: being a “store card”, it’s exclusively for your Argos shopping. It’ll also work at Sainsbury’s (it’s part of the same financial group), but that’s about it, as it’s not on the Mastercard or Visa networks.

So unless your heart is really set on Argos, you may want to consider more-traditional options. You can check out our selection of 0% purchase credit cards in the comparison table below.

How does it work?

Once you’ve been accepted and have received your card, you can use it both at physical stores and online. When you make a purchase, you’ll be able to see what credit plans are available to you, which will depend on how much you spend and will determine how long you can get credit for (usually no more than six months).

Aside from the standard credit plans, there are offers available on selected types of products, such as technology items, that will prolong your interest-free deal.

Provided that you pay off your debt in full by the end of the 0% period, you won’t be charged any interest. However, always keep in mind that if you don’t, any outstanding balance will start to accrue interest at the card’s standard rate.

If all this sounds a bit confusing, the good news is you can manage your Argos Card through a dedicated app that will tell you which credit plans you’re on and allow you to see card statements and make payments anytime.

Repayment options

When it comes to repayments, you can make manual repayments online or over the phone (03456 400700), or alternatively set up a direct debit. A direct debit is a great idea because it protects you from forgetting to make a repayment and either damaging your credit score, getting hit with a penalty fee or losing any promotional rates as a result. You can arrange a direct debit for repayments when you apply for the credit card. The table below shows the options available.

Choose from the following direct debit options for your monthly repayments:
