7 Best Bond ETFs in 2026

Seven funds built for different jobs — core stability, tax-exempt income, inflation protection and more.

High-yield corporate bond ETFs were paying a 30-day SEC yield above 7% as of October 2026, while the safest short-term Treasury funds sat closer to 4%.(1),(2) That gap is the whole story with bond ETFs: more yield almost always means more risk, and the right fund depends entirely on which side of that tradeoff you want to be on.

Bond ETFs let you hold a diversified basket of bonds in a single, exchange-traded fund (ETF), instead of buying individual bonds one at a time. Here are seven that cover the most common reasons investors reach for bonds, from core portfolio stability to tax-exempt income to inflation protection.

How we picked these bond ETFs

Each fund here leads a distinct category rather than competing head-to-head with the others:

  • Broad core exposure
  • Tax-exempt municipal income
  • Short-term safety
  • Investment-grade corporate credit
  • Inflation protection
  • High-yield income

Within each category, we favored the fund with the largest assets under management, since size tends to mean tighter bid-ask spreads and lower trading costs for everyday investors. Expense ratios, index methodology and holdings data all come directly from each issuer’s own fund page.

1. Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF (BND) — best for core exposure

BND tracks the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Float Adjusted Index, giving broad exposure to the investment-grade US bond market in a single fund: Treasuries, government agency debt, mortgage-backed securities and investment-grade corporate bonds.(3) Its expense ratio is 0.03%, and it holds roughly $161 billion in net assets, making it one of the largest bond funds of any kind.(3)

For investors who want one fund to cover “the bond portion” of a portfolio without picking between government and corporate debt, BND is built for exactly that. The tradeoff is that it won’t lead in any single category — its yield and risk sit squarely in the middle of the pack.

2. iShares Core U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF (AGG) — the other core option

AGG tracks the Bloomberg US Aggregate Bond Index and holds a similar mix to BND: Treasuries (46.8%), mortgage-backed securities (22.7%), industrial bonds (14.2%), financial institution debt (8.0%) and smaller allocations elsewhere.(4) Its expense ratio is also 0.03%, with about $137.3 billion in assets.(4)

BND and AGG are close enough in cost and composition that the choice between them often comes down to which brokerage you already use or which one has a slightly better bid-ask spread on a given day, rather than a meaningful difference in what you own.

3. iShares National Muni Bond ETF (MUB) — best for tax-exempt income

MUB tracks the ICE AMT-Free US National Municipal Index, holding investment-grade municipal bonds issued across the country.(5) Municipal bond interest is generally exempt from federal income tax, which can make MUB more valuable to investors in higher tax brackets than its headline yield alone suggests. The fund charges a 0.05% expense ratio and holds about $49.5 billion in net assets.(5)

The tradeoff: that tax exemption only helps if you’re holding the fund in a taxable account and in a high enough bracket for it to matter. In a 401(k) or IRA, a muni fund’s tax advantage is wasted, and a taxable bond fund will usually pay more.

4. iShares 0-1 Year Treasury Bond ETF (SHV) — best for safety

SHV holds US Treasury bonds with remaining maturities of one year or less, tracking the ICE Short US Treasury Securities Index.(2) Because its holdings mature so quickly, its price barely moves when interest rates change, making it one of the closest bond-ETF equivalents to cash. It charges a 0.15% expense ratio and holds about $23.6 billion in assets.(2)

That stability is also its limitation: short-term Treasuries pay less than most other bonds over time, so SHV works best as a place to park money you’ll need soon, not as a long-term income holding.

5. iShares iBoxx $ Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF (LQD) — best for investment-grade corporate credit

LQD tracks the iBoxx USD Liquid Investment Grade Index, holding roughly 3,167 US dollar-denominated corporate bonds rated BBB or higher.(6) Investment-grade corporate bonds typically pay more than government debt to compensate for slightly higher default risk. The fund’s expense ratio is 0.14%, with about $29.1 billion in assets.(6)

Corporate bonds carry credit risk that Treasuries don’t, meaning LQD can lose value if the economy weakens and corporate defaults rise, even if interest rates stay flat.

6. Schwab US TIPS ETF (SCHP) — best for inflation protection

SCHP tracks the Bloomberg US Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities Index, holding Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities across a broad range of maturities.(7) The principal value of TIPS adjusts with inflation, which can help protect purchasing power during periods of rising prices. The fund charges just a 0.03% expense ratio — among the cheapest of any bond ETF — and holds about $16.2 billion in assets, the most of any broad-maturity TIPS ETF.(7)

TIPS can still lose value if real interest rates rise even while inflation is low, so SCHP isn’t a guaranteed hedge against every kind of rate move — only against inflation specifically.

7. iShares Broad USD High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (USHY) — best for income

USHY tracks the ICE BofA US High Yield Constrained Index, holding about 1,902 below-investment-grade corporate bonds with a weighted average maturity of 4.23 years.(1) Its 30-day SEC yield was 7.69% as of October 2026, the highest on this list, while its 0.08% expense ratio is far lower than most other high-yield funds. The fund holds about $25.1 billion in assets, the most of any high-yield corporate bond ETF.(1)

That higher yield exists because “high yield” is a polite name for junk bonds: debt from companies with weaker credit, carrying a real risk of default. USHY tends to fall alongside stocks during economic stress, which undercuts the diversification benefit bonds are usually held for.

What is the Finder Score?

The Finder Score crunches 147 key metrics we collected directly from 18+ brokers and assessed each provider’s performance based on eight different categories, weighing each metric based on the expertise and insights of Finder’s investment experts. We then scored and ranked each provider to determine the best brokerage accounts.

We update our best picks as products change, disappear or emerge in the market. We also regularly review and revise our selections to ensure our best provider lists reflect the most competitive available.

Bottom line

There’s no single best bond ETF, because bonds serve different jobs in a portfolio depending on what you need: stability, tax-exempt income, inflation protection or extra yield. Start from what you want the bond portion of your portfolio to do, then pick the fund built for that job rather than the one with the highest current yield. For a broader view of how bonds fit alongside other fixed-income options, see our guide to what bonds are and how bonds compare to CDs. If you’re ready to invest, compare brokerage accounts that support ETF trading.
