The Citi Premier℠ Card — offered by Citi, a advertising partner — lets you earn accelerated points on everyday purchases at gas stations, restaurants, and grocery stores. You’ll also earn points on flights and hotels.

You can also take advantage of a 25% increase in point value when you redeem your points on airfare, making it a solid travel card whether you go by plane or car.

The perks

  • ThankYou points.
Earn 3x points at restaurants, supermarkets, gas stations, flights and hotels and 1x points on everything else you buy.
  • Signup bonus.
Spend $4,000 on purchases within 3 months of account opening and earn 60,000 bonus ThankYou points. According to the Citi site as of January 2019, that’s worth between $500 and $625.

Is the annual fee worth it?

The card comes with a $95 annual fee, which is waived for the first year. To make the card worth it, you can clear the signup bonus. Doing so comes with a value of $500 to $625, which is enough to outweigh the annual fee for the next five years.

Alternatively, you can spend $2,117 annually on purchases in the 3x points category.

You’ll also like …

  • Higher point value on airfare.
Your points are worth 25% more when you redeem for flights through the ThankYou Travel Center.
  • No foreign transaction fees.
Whenever you travel abroad, use your card without fear of incurring fees on foreign transactions.
  • Additional cards.
Add authorized users without additional annual fee costs and earn points on their purchases.
  • Choose your own due date.
Choose any available due date in the beginning, middle or end of the month. This gives you maximum flexibility to pay your balance and avoid paying interest.

What to watch out for

  • Annual fee.
Expect to pay $95 annually, starting from your second year of card membership.
  • Penalty APR.
Pay your balance on time, otherwise you could end up with a penalty APR of up to 29.99% variable. Once incurred, the penalty APR may last indefinitely.
  • No intro APR period.
Some travel credit cards offer an intro APR period on balance transfers and purchases. This card isn’t one of them. Compare 0% intro APR credit cards if you’re looking to save on interest.
