If you have an account with TD Bank, you might already know about its wire, ACH and online banking transfers worldwide. But you might not know that its rates tend to be more reasonable rates than other banks.

It’s also among the growing banks that support free and domestic money transfers through Zelle, which integrates into its site and app.

What is TD Bank money transfers?

Like many other big-name banks, TD Bank can get your money to friends and loved ones across the country or around the world. Overseas transfers are your standard international wire, whereby the bank exchanges your US dollars into the currency of your recipient, charging you a fee for the service. Customers say that rates are reasonable for a bank, but fees can be as high as $40 a transfer — again, standard for most banks.

TD Bank is among the many that partners with Zelle to transfer cash quickly and at no charge to nearly anybody in the States with an email address or mobile number. You can also schedule free transfers to another TD Bank customer online or through the bank’s app.

How are TD Bank’s exchange rates?

TD Bank owns its foreign exchange currency trading platform, which results in rates that tend to be stronger when compared with other banks and credit unions.

The bank recommends wiring foreign currency, instead of US dollars, when sending money abroad, as doing so can mean faster payments and more competitive rates. It could also result in lower fees, as correspondent banks often charge more for currency exchanges during transfers.

How much will I pay to send money with TD Bank?

For international transfers, TD Bank charges a fixed $15 fee for incoming and $40 for outgoing international money transfers. Domestic transfers come with a fixed $25 fee.

These rates compare favorably with other US banks. For instance, PNC charges $45 for outgoing transfers and $15 for incoming transfers from other countries.

Domestic transfers to existing TD Bank customers and those sent through Zelle are free.

Minimum transfer amounts and available countries

TD Bank does not appear to enforce a minimum transfer amount on domestic incoming and outgoing transfers. Rather, your limits might depend on your relationship with the bank. The same is true for incoming and outgoing wire transfers from and to other countries.

Because TD Bank is an international financial institutions, you should be able to send money to recipients in other countries with a correspondent TD Bank.

What types of transfers does TD Bank support?

TD Bank offers domestic and international wire transfers, as well as online money transfers through its online banking app. You can also schedule regular payments through your online account or the app.

How do I send money through TD Bank?

You must own an account with TD Bank to send money domestically or internationally.

To set up your international transfer, you’ll need:

  • Your recipient’s full name and contact information.
  • Your recipient’s banking details, including their bank name, SWIFT code and account number. For transfers to Europe, you might need the IBAN for your recipient’s bank.
  • The amount you’d like to send and the currency in which you’d like it delivered.

Set up international wire and ACH transfers online and at your local branch. Cutoff for wire transfers is 2 p.m. each day, regardless of where you’re sending it. After 2 p.m., your transfer is based on the next day’s exchange rate.

TD Bank integrates Zelle’s payment platform for domestic transfers, allowing you to set up transfers easily from your phone with only your recipient’s email address or phone number. Delivery to non-Zelle accounts can take from up to five days for delivery.

How do I track my TD Bank transfer?

Track the progress of your money transfer through TD Bank’s banking app or your online account. If you set up your transaction through your local branch, call for details.

What to look out for

It’s not easy to know the exchange rate you’ll get until you set up your international money transfer, making it difficult to compare what you’ll pay with other banks.

It’s also likely that you can find stronger exchange rates and lower fees with an international money transfer specialist like OFX or Wise.

Benefits and drawbacks

Benefits

  • Competitive rates. Customers say that exchange rates are stronger than similar banks.
  • Safe, flexible transfers. Easily send money to existing TD Bank customers easily from your online account or through the mobile app, with easy tracking.
  • Free, fast domestic transfers. Send money through Zelle for free with only your recipient’s phone number or email address.

Drawbacks

  • Not the most competitive rates. They might be stronger than those offered by other banks, but lower rates are likely with online specialists.
  • High fees. Many online money specialists charge a low flat rate — sometimes as low as $5 — or a percentage of your transfer that’s likely less than the $45 you might pay with TD Bank.

How safe is TD Bank?

TD Bank is committed to protecting your personal and financial details with transfers and all other products the bank offers. Its site is encrypted with transport layer security and secure socket layer to keep your details out of the hands of hackers.

The bank also works with a third-party security firm to test the safety of its systems, and it uses various identity checks to confirm you are who you claim you are.

TD Bank reviews and complaints

As of October 2020, reviews on Trustpilot are few, with two of the five existing reviews raving about TD Bank’s convenient hours and willingness to work with customers on fees. The other reviews say that service is poor and inconvenient to getting issues resolved.

Accredited by the Better Business Bureau since 2002, TD Bank earns an A+ from the BBB based on its internal criteria that considers customer complaints and transparency. Reviews on the site beg to differ with the BBB’s rating: An overwhelming 94% of the 890 reviews on the site at the time of writing are negative. These complaints are not about money transfers specifically, but many cite high fees, poor customer service and difficult to resolve disputes among pain points.
