Fact checked

Breakdown cover is available for electric vehicles (EVs), and can be covered under the same policies as petrol and diesel vehicles, but there are some extra things for EVs that owners need to be aware of.

If you’re looking at breakdown cover for EVs, you’ll need to understand how a provider approaches EVs in terms of expertise, the size of its patrol network, roadside repair capability and what happens if the vehicle runs out of charge. Then, you should also compare price and standard benefits such as roadside assistance and recovery.

Major UK providers including The AA, RAC and Green Flag offer breakdown assistance for electric vehicles, but the services and levels of cover available can differ.

Which are the best breakdown providers for electric vehicles in 2026?

We’ve focused on the 3 biggest providers for this section as they’re most likely options you’ll be comparing.

The AA

The AA has more than 2,500 patrols trained in EV systems, which is higher than any other provider*. These offer specialised roadside, home and national recovery services. The AA’s Freewheeling Hub is a clever way for AA patrols to safely tow vehicles, such as electric vehicles and SUVs, which normally cannot be lifted and towed. 92% of AA customers who were surveyed in Finder’s 2026 Customer Satisfaction Awards said they would recommend it. The AA was the overall winner of the awards.

RAC

With its All-Wheels-Up lifting technology on standard patrol vans, RAC patrols are able to safely recover EVs without needing a dedicated flatbed truck. Some patrols also have a mobile battery to give your vehicle some charge when an EV is out of battery and can’t be moved. In our 2026 survey, 88% of RAC customers said they would recommend it.

Green Flag

Green Flag is usually the cheapest option of the 3 providers here, with regular deals to attract customers away from the others above. However, the trade-off with price means not all patrols are the same. Green Flag relies on a hybrid approach of its own smaller fleet and a network of local garages. So some patrols will come with similar towing capabilities as other providers, but others will just be standard flatbed tow trucks. That means they will also have differing levels of EV training and knowledge. 91% of Green Flag customers we surveyed in 2026 told us they would recommend it.

Best electric vehicle breakdown cover by expert score

We recently conducted a study on electric vehicle cover policies from the UK’s major breakdown cover providers, ranking The AA #1 for EV breakdown cover in 2026, scoring 9.5/10. Here is our top three:

3Green Flag8/10

Why we rated The AA as the best breakdown provider for electric vehicles

We rated the AA as our top breakdown provider for electric vehicle cover with a score of 9.5/10, because it scored highest in the majority of our assessment categories.

This is largely down to The AA having more dedicated patrols than any other major UK breakdown provider (over 2,500), 98% of its patrol force being Level 2 Electric Vehicle trained, and the highest Trustpilot (4.8/5) and customer satisfaction (9.2/10) scores.

How we score electric vehicle breakdown cover providers

We assessed these electric vehicle breakdown cover providers based on several core categories:

  • Number of EV-trained patrols and level of out-of-charge support
  • Customer reviews and satisfaction scores
  • Percentage of vehicles fixed at roadside
  • Number of dedicated patrols
  • Free unlimited callouts

We believe that these categories are the most important features to consider when choosing EV cover from a breakdown provider, as each covers off the three main evaluation areas: reliable roadside assistance, quality of electric vehicle breakdown cover and real value for money.

What features should you look for in EV breakdown cover?

There isn’t necessarily a separate type of breakdown policy required simply because a car is electric. Instead, drivers should consider how well a provider’s service and chosen cover level meet the particular needs of an EV. Not all providers and policies are equal, so it’s important you get this right.

FeatureWhy it matters
Roadside assistanceIt’s cheaper to pay annually rather than monthly. But you also need to see what you’re paying for. You might opt for a cheaper plan with less included.
Roadside repair capabilityA higher roadside repair rate can give you the confidence that once a patrol arrives you should be able to get the support you need. The AA and RAC both fix 4/5 cars at the roadside**.
EV-trained patrols and technical expertiseAlthough many EVs break down for the same reasons as other cars, sometimes it can be a problem specific to an EV. When that happens, you’ll want the right support for your car. The AA operates the largest network trained in EV systems, with over 2,500 patrols.
Vehicle recoveryIf your vehicle can’t be repaired then you want to choose a provider that makes the next stop as smooth as possible so you can get the support you need.
Support if the main battery runs out of chargeThis could be a patrol giving you enough charge to get you to a charging point or towing you there so you can charge the battery yourself.
Home assistanceThis is for when your vehicle breaks down at home or very near to it. The cheapest policies won’t include this as standard. You’re less likely to be stranded if your car breaks down at home, but it could mean you need to change plans.
Onward travelIf your vehicle can’t be fixed at the roadside, having onward travel cover means you’ll be offered a way to continue your journey. This is normally an add-on to basic policies and what you’re offered will depend on your policy. It’s likely to be reimbursement for public transport costs, a hotel stay or a hire car.
Breakdown reporting and live trackingYou can report a breakdown in the provider’s app and then track the driver until they arrive. This can give you peace of mind while you wait knowing support is on the way.

What are the benefits of choosing electric vehicle breakdown cover?

An electric vehicle breakdown doesn’t always mean the car will need recovering. There are some issues that can often be fixed at the roadside. With their high high-voltage systems, EVs must be managed safely and recovery methods differ from conventional vehicles. Diagnostics rely more on electronic systems than other cars. That’s why it’s important you have the right breakdown cover for your EV.

These are some commons reasons an EV might break down and why it’s important to have the right cover;

  • 12V auxiliary battery. Batteries fail in all types of vehicles, but when it happens in an EV, the main battery can’t engage and you could be left unable to move. Unlike with a petrol car, which is possible to jump-start, an EV needs charging before you can turn it back on. Providers like RAC and The AA offer emergency roadside charging to give your electric vehicle enough charge to get to a nearby charger.
  • Software/firmware bugs. EVs rely on software to run, so if there’s a problem or bug, it can cause issues that might require a software update to resolve. If this happens, you’re going to want a provider like the AA that has EV-trained patrols who can diagnose EV system issues.
  • Tyre and suspension wear. The battery packs in EVs mean they’re generally heavier than petrol cars, which can cause tyres to wear out up to 20% faster. This extra weight can also cause suspension issues. EV-trained patrols know how to deal with this extra weight.
  • Drivetrain/motor failure. EVs don’t have as many moving parts in the motor, so mechanical drivetrain failure is extremely rare in EVs compared to other cars. That said, it can still happen. The AA and RAC have specific, different ways of dealing with towing EVs that will protect the drivetrain while they take your car to a garage.

What happens if your EV runs out of charge?

This will depend on your policy terms and your provider, as they all do it differently. As a general overview, if an EV runs out of charge, your breakdown provider will attempt to assist at the roadside. Some patrols will have mobile chargers to give your car enough charge so you can drive to a proper charging point or back home so it can be charged properly. Others will tow you to a charge point.

Personal cover vs vehicle breakdown cover for electric cars

When you buy a breakdown policy, you need to decide if you want personal cover or vehicle cover.

Personal cover can be used for multiple people and gives anyone named on the policy cover for any vehicle they’re in, whether that’s as a driver or a passenger.

Vehicle cover means the vehicle is covered regardless of who the driver is. Vehicle cover is usually cheaper.

The type of policy you need will depend on your own circumstances, so decide wisely. If you live in a household with a single EV and multiple drivers, vehicle cover will probably be best. This will ensure everyone can drive the vehicle and it will have an adequate level of cover, whoever is behind the wheel.

What breakdown cover should new EV drivers consider?

If you’re a new EV owner and looking at breakdown cover, you’ll probably realise breakdown cover works pretty similarly to conventional car breakdown cover. Most everyday roadside problems can still be assessed by a patrol, while recovery can be arranged where a repair isn’t possible.

You’ll need to research properly when you compare providers, because they all handle EVs differently. That means you should see what will happen if you run out of charge, if EV-trained technicians are available in all patrols and where your vehicle can be recovered to. You also need to consider whether you want home assistance or onward travel. This will vary by provider and the level of cover.

The AA is a strong option to consider for electric vehicle breakdown cover, particularly for drivers who value EV-trained patrol expertise and a dedicated patrol network of around 2,500 drivers.

Bottom line

Every breakdown provider has a different way of approaching electric vehicles, so it’s important to read about what a policy offers before you make a decision.

When you compare EV breakdown cover, think about a provider’s specialist EV expertise, roadside repair capability, dedicated patrol availability and recovery options.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get roadside assistance for an electric vehicle?

Yes. Major UK breakdown providers including The AA, RAC and Green Flag provide breakdown assistance for electric vehicles. The exact services available will depend on the provider and level of cover.

What is the best breakdown cover for electric vehicles?

There isn’t one policy that will necessarily be best for every EV driver. Factors to compare include price, roadside assistance, EV-trained technician availability, recovery options, home assistance and onward travel. The AA is one provider worth considering for drivers who place particular importance on EV-trained patrol expertise and roadside repair capability.

Are electric cars more likely to break down than petrol cars?

EVs break down less often than other cars because they don’t have as many things that could go wrong.

Breakdown data from The AA shows that running out of charge, while already unusual, is becoming increasingly rare, with less than 2% of EV breakdowns relating to a lack of charge in the drive batteries.

Is breakdown cover more expensive for electric cars?

No, it doesn’t normally cost more. You could get cover for as little as £5 a month, but what you pay depends on your vehicle and the lever of cover you opt for. Some packaged bank accounts will include breakdown cover, so check to see if you have that option.
