Regulators have approved six spot XRP exchange-traded funds (ETFs) so far, giving investors a new way to gain exposure to XRP without directly buying or storing cryptocurrency.(1)
Here’s what you need to know about spot XRP ETFs, how they work and which funds are currently available.
What is a spot XRP ETF?
A spot XRP ETF is an exchange-traded fund that invests directly in XRP, the native token of the XRP Ledger. The fund holds XRP on behalf of investors and aims to track the cryptocurrency’s real-time (spot) price.
This structure is similar to spot bitcoin ETFs and spot ethereum ETFs, and differs from XRP-related funds that use derivatives like futures contracts to approximate XRP’s price.
XRP is the fifth-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, as of January 2026, and is closely tied to Ripple, a payments company focused on enabling faster and cheaper cross-border transactions.(2) While traditional international transfers can take days, XRP transactions typically settle in seconds and at a fraction of the cost.(3)
Why XRP ETFs matter
Spot XRP ETFs allow investors to gain exposure to XRP through a traditional brokerage account, including retirement accounts, without needing to:
- Open an account with a crypto exchange
- Manage private keys or wallets
- Handle on-chain transactions directly
Interest in XRP ETFs grew after Ripple’s long-running legal battle with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) began to resolve. In July 2023, a federal judge ruled that Ripple’s programmatic sales of XRP on exchanges did not constitute unregistered securities offerings.(4) In August 2025, the SEC dropped its case against Ripple entirely, paving the way for spot XRP ETFs to launch.(5)
XRP price performance
Following broader crypto market trends, XRP is down roughly 14.5% over the past year, as of January 13, 2026, despite a sharp rally after the SEC fully dismissed its case in August 2025.
XRP experienced significant volatility in 2025, trading as low as $1.53 in April and reaching highs near $3.65 in July.(6) While the second half of the year was weaker, XRP is already up nearly 16% in 2026, as of January 13, 2026.
How to buy a spot XRP ETF
Buying a spot XRP ETF is similar to buying any other ETF:
- Choose a brokerage platform. Look for a broker that offers commission-free ETF trading and access to US-listed funds.
- Open and fund your account. Provide your personal information and fund your account via bank transfer or other supported methods.
- Search for the ETF ticker. Use the ETF’s ticker symbol to find the fund and review its fee, holdings and prospectus.
- Place your trade. Buy shares using a market or limit order.
The entire process can take as little as 15 minutes.

What to know before investing in XRP ETFs
Here are a few key things to understand before investing in XRP ETFs, particularly as new funds enter the market and product terms continue to evolve.
More XRP ETFs may launch
Several issuers, including CoinShares and WisdomTree, have filed paperwork with the SEC for spot XRP ETFs but have not yet launched funds.
Fee waivers are temporary
Some issuers are waiving fees to attract early investors, but these promotions are time-limited. If you invest later, the standard expense ratio may apply.
Less control than owning XRP directly
Spot XRP ETFs make XRP more accessible, but they come with tradeoffs. Investors can’t:
- Send XRP to another wallet
- Use XRP for payments
- Lend or stake XRP for yield
To access those features, you’d need to buy XRP directly through a crypto exchange.
XRP ETF alternatives
If a spot XRP ETF isn’t right for you, other ways to gain exposure include:
- Buying XRP directly through a cryptocurrency exchange
- Crypto-focused stocks with exposure to blockchain or digital asset infrastructure
- Other crypto ETFs, including spot bitcoin and spot ethereum ETFs
Bottom line
Spot XRP ETFs provide a regulated, brokerage-friendly way to invest in one of the largest cryptocurrencies by market cap. While they simplify access and eliminate the need for crypto wallets or exchanges, investors should weigh management fees and reduced control against the convenience they offer.
As with any crypto investment, XRP ETFs come with significant volatility and risk.
