Best TD Ameritrade Alternatives in 2026

TD Ameritrade's merger into Charles Schwab is complete — here's where to go if you want a different broker.

Must Read: TD Ameritrade announcement

Charles Schwab completed its acquisition of TD Ameritrade in October 2020 and expects to conclude the business combination in 2024. New TD Ameritrade accounts can no longer be opened. Read more about Charles Schwab and what this broker has to offer.

TD Ameritrade no longer exists as a standalone broker. Charles Schwab completed its acquisition of TD Ameritrade in October 2020, and after a multi-year integration, Schwab shut down the last TD Ameritrade platforms and moved all remaining accounts onto its own systems in May 2024.

If you were a TD Ameritrade customer, you’re now a Schwab customer by default. If you’re looking for a different broker altogether — whether you found the transition to Schwab wasn’t the right fit or you’re simply comparing your options — here are five alternatives worth considering.

Top 5 TD Ameritrade alternatives

Robinhood

Robinhood

9.4 Excellent

The pioneer of commission-free trading, Robinhood is known for its:
  • Commission-free stocks, ETFs, options and crypto
  • User-friendly interface
  • Fractional-share trading

Commission-free trading is table stakes across the industry now, but Robinhood has kept growing anyway: the platform reported 28.5 million funded customers as of July 2026. Instant deposits give investors immediate cash to invest, and fractional shares let investors buy stocks and crypto with as little as $1.

Robinhood Gold, the platform's paid tier, costs $5 a month or $50 a year and adds margin investing, Level II market data, Cortex (Robinhood's AI research assistant), a 3% IRA contribution match and a higher APY on uninvested cash. Active traders get real tools now too, through the free Robinhood Legend platform: 90-plus technical indicators, up to eight charts at once and a scanner with 60-plus fundamental and technical filters. Robinhood still doesn't offer mutual funds or forex trading.

Interactive Brokers

Interactive Brokers

9.4 Excellent

Read review
Like TD Ameritrade once was, Interactive Brokers (IBKR) is great for:
  • Advanced traders
  • Investors who want access to global markets
  • Investors who want access to a wide variety of securities

IBKR splits its offering into two tiers. IBKR Lite gives US retail investors commission-free trades on US-listed stocks and ETFs, with no account minimum. IBKR Pro uses tiered or fixed per-share commissions in exchange for advanced order routing, deeper market access and the full Trader Workstation platform, which supports 90-plus order types and algorithmic trading tools.

IBKR should give the experienced, active investor much to work with, which should feel familiar to former TD Ameritrade customers or anyone coming from another advanced trading platform. But depending on skill level, IBKR Pro's tiered fee structure and dense interface can be overwhelming for beginners, who are generally better served by IBKR Lite.

SoFi Invest shines for its features targeted to cost-conscious, beginner investors. These include:
  • Fractional share trading
  • Automated investing

Like other discount brokers, SoFi lets you trade stocks and ETFs commission-free, with no account minimum. Fractional shares start at $5. SoFi's automated investing account, or robo-advisor, carries a $50 minimum and a 0.25% annual advisory fee.

SoFi Bank relaunched crypto trading in November 2025, becoming the first nationally chartered US bank to offer it directly inside its banking app, so crypto is now part of the broader SoFi ecosystem. SoFi Invest still doesn't offer futures or forex trading.

Fidelity Investments

Fidelity Investments

9.2 Excellent

Read review
One of the largest brokers in the US, Fidelity Investments stands out for its:
  • Fractional share trading
  • Robust research tools
  • No minimum and expense-ratio-free index funds

Fidelity offers fractional share trading on more than 7,000 US stocks and ETFs, starting at $1, and its zero-expense-ratio index funds remain unique in the industry. Fidelity Crypto lets customers buy, sell and transfer bitcoin, ether and other coins directly in the same app as their stocks and ETFs, though availability still varies by state.

Fidelity clients can invest on their own or open an account with Fidelity Go, the firm's robo-advisor. Fidelity Go charges no advisory fee on balances under $25,000, and 0.35% annually above that.

Investors should find Fidelity's library of research tools a natural fit, including stock and ETF screeners and access to third-party research providers alongside Fidelity's own analysis.

Vanguard

Vanguard Brokerage

8.2 Great

Read review
One of the biggest names in investing, Vanguard is known for:
  • Its large selection of quality ETFs and mutual funds
  • Its long-term investment options
  • Its low-fee index funds

As a leader in low-cost investing, Vanguard is an ideal choice for the buy-and-hold investor. Active traders can also benefit from commission-free stock and ETF trading, though Vanguard doesn't offer fractional shares of individual stocks.

Vanguard's robo-advisor, Vanguard Digital Advisor, now requires just a $100 minimum to enroll and charges a net advisory fee of roughly 0.15% a year, with the first 90 days free. Most Vanguard mutual funds still require a $3,000 minimum, though Vanguard's own ETF equivalents (like VTI) carry no such minimum beyond the cost of one share.

Active investors may still want more than Vanguard offers on the research and charting side, where it continues to lag behind competitors.

What happened to TD Ameritrade

Charles Schwab and TD Ameritrade announced their merger in November 2019 and closed the acquisition in October 2020. Full integration of TD Ameritrade’s remaining clients — including the thinkorswim platform, which Schwab retained — was completed in May 2024, when TD Ameritrade’s platforms were shut down for good. Anyone who hadn’t already switched brokers by that point was automatically converted to a Schwab account.

Pros and cons of Charles Schwab

Pros

  • Commission-free online stock, ETF and options trades
  • $0 minimum investment
  • A leading trading platform (thinkorswim) with advanced research and charting tools
  • Extensive investment options, including fractional shares

Cons

  • Schwab Intelligent Portfolios robo-advisor requires a $5,000 minimum investment
  • Crypto trading (Schwab Crypto, launched May 2026) is currently limited to bitcoin and ethereum only

How to transfer your brokerage account

If you’ve decided to switch brokers, your new broker should outline how to make the switch. Most transfers use the Automated Customer Account Transfer Service (ACATS) system. Charges vary by broker — some, including Schwab, charge nothing to transfer an account out, while others charge $75 or more. Your new broker may reimburse an outgoing charge from your old broker since you’re bringing them your business, and your new broker is typically the one that initiates the transfer.

Follow these steps to transfer your account to another broker:

  1. Get a statement from your old broker that includes information like your account number and current assets.
  2. Log in to your new brokerage account and navigate to that broker’s account transfer services section.
  3. Request to transfer your assets from your old broker into your new account. Your new broker will validate your request and initiate the transfer, which typically takes five to seven business days to complete.

Each broker determines which types of assets are transferable. If an asset cannot be transferred, you should be given the option to liquidate your position ahead of the transfer.
