There are currently 4.7 million Invacare Corporation shares held short by investors – that's known as Invacare Corporation's "short interest". This figure is 3.1% down from 4.8 million last month.

There are a few different ways that this level of interest in shorting Invacare Corporation shares can be evaluated.

Invacare Corporation's "short interest ratio" (SIR)

Invacare Corporation's "short interest ratio" (SIR) is the quantity of Invacare Corporation shares currently shorted divided by the average quantity of Invacare Corporation shares traded daily (recently around 177695.19634007). Invacare Corporation's SIR currently stands at 26.23. In other words for every 100,000 Invacare Corporation shares traded daily on the market, roughly 26230 shares are currently held short.

However Invacare Corporation's short interest can also be evaluated against the total number of Invacare Corporation shares, or, against the total number of tradable Invacare Corporation shares (the shares that aren't held by "insiders" or major long-term shareholders – also known as the "float"). In this case Invacare Corporation's short interest could be expressed as 0.14% of the outstanding shares (for every 100,000 Invacare Corporation shares in existence, roughly 140 shares are currently held short) or 0.1654% of the tradable shares (for every 100,000 tradable Invacare Corporation shares, roughly 165 shares are currently held short).

A SIR above 20% would generally be considered very high, pointing to a pessimistic outlook for the share price, with a discouraging number of investors currently willing to bet against Invacare Corporation.
