But in general, this account falls short as its main feature for people with disabilities is that it allows SSI/SSDI deposits, which is something you can do with any other bank account.

The Purple Mastercard Debit Card comes with a checking account that donates a portion of its profits to the Special Olympics every time you swipe your debit card — its only real standout feature.

While its advertising markets this account as being designed for people with disabilities, it isn’t transparent with how it helps individuals achieve more financial independence. It boasts that the account is able to receive Social Security Disability insurance and Supplemental Security income, but any other bank account allows you to do the same. Plus, its slow onboarding process and lack of customer service isn’t helpful to those with disabilities and instead contributes to similar marginalization experienced elsewhere in an able-bodied environment.

If you want an account that’s advantageous for people with disabilities, consider a checking account that offers more in rewards and interest.

How do I open a Purple Mastercard Debit Card?

You can’t sign up for the Purple debit card immediately. First, open an account following these five steps:

  1. Go to the provider’s site and follow the steps to apply.
  2. Click or tap Get started.
  3. Enter your first and last name and email address.
  4. Check your email for your invitation to download its mobile banking app.
  5. Follow the prompts to set up your account.

Required information

You’ll need to provide the following personal details when you open an account:

  • Full name
  • Residential address
  • Date of birth
  • Government-issued ID


To qualify for a Purple Mastercard, you’ll need to meet these requirements:

  • US citizen or permanent resident
  • At least 18 years old
  • Have a valid Social Security number

What are the Purple Mastercard Debit Card benefits?

On top of claiming it provides people with disabilities the opportunity to achieve more financial independence, a Purple Mastercard Debit Card offers these benefits:

  • No monthly fee. It costs nothing each month to maintain your account.
  • Receive SSI and SSDI. Like any bank account, have your Supplemental Security Income and Social Security Disability Insurance deposited into your account.
  • Gives back to the community. Purple donates a portion of its revenue to the Special Olympics for every purchase you make using your Purple Mastercard Debit Card.

What should I look out for?

Since Purple is still getting its footing, there are a few kinks in the system.

  • Slow onboarding process. You can’t apply for a Purple debit card immediately. You’ll need to sign up and wait an undisclosed amount of time for an emailed link to download its mobile banking app to sign up.
  • Limited customer service. You can’t speak to a person in real-time. Live chat and email aren’t instantaneous, and there’s no phone number to call customer service.
  • Not transparent. Its website doesn’t list its fees and ATM access is unclear. We reached out to Purple on July 7 and are waiting to hear back. For now, its website refers you to the Deposit Account Agreement that’s only available on its invite-only mobile banking app.
