What are the best items to buy on Cyber Monday vs. Black Friday?

If you’re looking for something specific, like a certain brand or model of smartphone or laptop, or even sales on a particular clothing line, it’s best to do a little digging around before Black Friday hits so you can find out if the lowest prices will hit Black Friday or Cyber Monday. That said, you’ll want to pay special attention to online-only stores on Cyber Monday and even the week after Cyber Monday, sometimes called “Cyber Week.” You can usually find good deals on clothing items from online boutiques, as well as electronics from Apple, Microsoft, Amazon and others.

Tips & Tricks for Cyber Monday

  • Do your research. Many retailers publish their Cyber Monday deals before the day, meaning you have time to consider your options and really find the best bargain. Then, there’s also Black Friday, Thanksgiving Day and pre-Thanksgiving sales you should consider. Our suggestion? Start hunting for bargains now, because a lot of retailers are already advertising, if not selling, them.
  • Pay attention to shipping. Always a good one to check before you get excited over a deal, though more and more websites are offering free shipping on all orders or those above a specific amount.
  • Shop around and shop early. You might find a better deal elsewhere or prior to Cyber Monday. If it’s a bargain on Thursday or Friday with a price you’re willing to pay, jump on it before it either goes up (a common ploy many retailers do to make a little more from the shopping hype) or before it is sold out.
  • Use an app to keep track of deals. With so many Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals going on, it can be hard to keep track of everything and find the lowest price. Download a smartphone app like Slickdeals, Flipp, Shopkick and DealNews to help you stay organized.

When is Cyber Monday?

Officially it’s the Monday after Thanksgiving, but keep an eye out for discounts beginning as early as Thanksgiving Day, as well as Black Friday and throughout the weekend. Some retailers even promote Cyber Monday offers for an entire week.

Are the deals only on Cyber Monday?

No. Deals start on Thanksgiving or the day after (Friday) on what’s called Black Friday. It’s the first day of the holiday and Christmas shopping period, and therefore the first day of sales. Some even argue that you’re better off going shopping on Black Friday (or even on Thanksgiving), as by the time Cyber Monday rolls around, you’ll find you’ve been beaten to the punch with an out-of-stock sign. According to Adobe research, it’s even suggested that prices are lowest on Thanksgiving and increase as Black Friday and Cyber Monday roll around. It’s up to you, honestly, but just know that the sales do start as early as Thanksgiving Thursday.

Has Cyber Monday gone global?

Cyber Monday got its start in the United States, but more recently, websites and retailers from around the world are joining in, meaning there are great bargains, deals and discounts to be had from your favorites, no matter where they come from.
