There are currently 55.4 million Uber Technologies shares held short by investors – that's known as Uber Technologies's "short interest". This figure is 18.5% down from 67.9 million last month.
There are a few different ways that this level of interest in shorting Uber Technologies shares can be evaluated.
Uber Technologies's "short interest ratio" (SIR) is the quantity of Uber Technologies shares currently shorted divided by the average quantity of Uber Technologies shares traded daily (recently around 19.6 million). Uber Technologies's SIR currently stands at 2.82. In other words for every 100,000 Uber Technologies shares traded daily on the market, roughly 2820 shares are currently held short.
However Uber Technologies's short interest can also be evaluated against the total number of Uber Technologies shares, or, against the total number of tradable Uber Technologies shares (the shares that aren't held by "insiders" or major long-term shareholders – also known as the "float"). In this case Uber Technologies's short interest could be expressed as 0.03% of the outstanding shares (for every 100,000 Uber Technologies shares in existence, roughly 30 shares are currently held short) or 0.0398% of the tradable shares (for every 100,000 tradable Uber Technologies shares, roughly 40 shares are currently held short).
Such a low SIR usually points to an optimistic outlook for the share price, with fewer people currently willing to bet against Uber Technologies.
