There are currently 3.1 million Rockwell Medical shares held short by investors – that's known as Rockwell Medical's "short interest". This figure is 21.7% down from 3.9 million last month.
There are a few different ways that this level of interest in shorting Rockwell Medical shares can be evaluated.
Rockwell Medical's "short interest ratio" (SIR) is the quantity of Rockwell Medical shares currently shorted divided by the average quantity of Rockwell Medical shares traded daily (recently around 1.2 million). Rockwell Medical's SIR currently stands at 2.56. In other words for every 100,000 Rockwell Medical shares traded daily on the market, roughly 2560 shares are currently held short.
However Rockwell Medical's short interest can also be evaluated against the total number of Rockwell Medical shares, or, against the total number of tradable Rockwell Medical shares (the shares that aren't held by "insiders" or major long-term shareholders – also known as the "float"). In this case Rockwell Medical's short interest could be expressed as 0.03% of the outstanding shares (for every 100,000 Rockwell Medical shares in existence, roughly 30 shares are currently held short) or 0.0304% of the tradable shares (for every 100,000 tradable Rockwell Medical shares, roughly 30 shares are currently held short).
Such a low SIR usually points to an optimistic outlook for the share price, with fewer people currently willing to bet against Rockwell Medical.

We're not expecting Rockwell Medical to pay a dividend over the next 12 months.
Over the last 12 months, Rockwell Medical's shares have ranged in value from as little as $0.83 up to $3.85. A popular way to gauge a stock's volatility is its "beta".
Beta is a measure of a share's volatility in relation to the market. The market (NASDAQ average) beta is 1, while Rockwell Medical's is 0.9955. This would suggest that Rockwell Medical's shares are less volatile than average (for this exchange).
