Shorting Ontrak shares

There are currently 2.4 million Ontrak shares held short by investors – that's known as Ontrak's "short interest". This figure is 25% down from 3.2 million last month.

There are a few different ways that this level of interest in shorting Ontrak shares can be evaluated.

Ontrak's "short interest ratio" (SIR)

Ontrak's "short interest ratio" (SIR) is the quantity of Ontrak shares currently shorted divided by the average quantity of Ontrak shares traded daily (recently around 523421.23893805). Ontrak's SIR currently stands at 4.52. In other words for every 100,000 Ontrak shares traded daily on the market, roughly 4520 shares are currently held short.

However Ontrak's short interest can also be evaluated against the total number of Ontrak shares, or, against the total number of tradable Ontrak shares (the shares that aren't held by "insiders" or major long-term shareholders – also known as the "float"). In this case Ontrak's short interest could be expressed as 0.14% of the outstanding shares (for every 100,000 Ontrak shares in existence, roughly 140 shares are currently held short) or 0.2883% of the tradable shares (for every 100,000 tradable Ontrak shares, roughly 288 shares are currently held short).

Such a low SIR usually points to an optimistic outlook for the share price, with fewer people currently willing to bet against Ontrak.

Ontrak share dividends

We're not expecting Ontrak to pay a dividend over the next 12 months.

Have Ontrak's shares ever split?

Ontrak's shares were split on a 1:6 basis on 25 April 2017. So if you had owned 6 shares the day before before the split, the next day you'd have owned 1 share. This wouldn't directly have changed the overall worth of your Ontrak shares – just the quantity. However, indirectly, the new 500% higher share price could have impacted the market appetite for Ontrak shares which in turn could have impacted Ontrak's share price.

Ontrak share price volatility

Over the last 12 months, Ontrak's shares have ranged in value from as little as $8.55 up to $99.89. A popular way to gauge a stock's volatility is its "beta".

Beta is a measure of a share's volatility in relation to the market. The market (NASDAQ average) beta is 1, while Ontrak's is 2.5117. This would suggest that Ontrak's shares are significantly more volatile than the average for this exchange and represent a higher risk.
