TTM: trailing 12 months
There are currently 8.8 million Jumia Technologies shares held short by investors – that's known as Jumia Technologies's "short interest". This figure is 35.9% down from 13.7 million last month.
There are a few different ways that this level of interest in shorting Jumia Technologies shares can be evaluated.
Jumia Technologies's "short interest ratio" (SIR) is the quantity of Jumia Technologies shares currently shorted divided by the average quantity of Jumia Technologies shares traded daily (recently around 10.1 million). Jumia Technologies's SIR currently stands at 0.87. In other words for every 100,000 Jumia Technologies shares traded daily on the market, roughly 870 shares are currently held short.
However Jumia Technologies's short interest can also be evaluated against the total number of Jumia Technologies shares, or, against the total number of tradable Jumia Technologies shares (the shares that aren't held by "insiders" or major long-term shareholders – also known as the "float"). In this case Jumia Technologies's short interest could be expressed as 0.1% of the outstanding shares (for every 100,000 Jumia Technologies shares in existence, roughly 100 shares are currently held short) or 0% of the tradable shares (for every 100,000 tradable Jumia Technologies shares, roughly 0 shares are currently held short).
Such a low SIR usually points to an optimistic outlook for the share price, with fewer people currently willing to bet against Jumia Technologies.
