Is Atlanticus Holdings Corporation under- or over-valued?

Valuing Atlanticus Holdings Corporation stock is incredibly difficult, and any metric has to be viewed as part of a bigger picture of Atlanticus Holdings Corporation's overall performance. However, analysts commonly use some key metrics to help gauge the value of a stock.

Atlanticus Holdings Corporation's P/E ratio

Atlanticus Holdings Corporation's current share price divided by its per-share earnings (EPS) over a 12-month period gives a "trailing price/earnings ratio" of roughly 8x. In other words, Atlanticus Holdings Corporation shares trade at around 8x recent earnings.

That's relatively low compared to, say, the trailing 12-month P/E ratio for the NASDAQ 100 at the end of 2019 (27.29). The low P/E ratio could mean that investors are pessimistic about the outlook for the shares or simply that they're under-valued.

Shorting Atlanticus Holdings Corporation shares

There are currently 577,606 Atlanticus Holdings Corporation shares held short by investors – that's known as Atlanticus Holdings Corporation's "short interest". This figure is 11.6% down from 653,080 last month.

There are a few different ways that this level of interest in shorting Atlanticus Holdings Corporation shares can be evaluated.

Atlanticus Holdings Corporation's "short interest ratio" (SIR)

Atlanticus Holdings Corporation's "short interest ratio" (SIR) is the quantity of Atlanticus Holdings Corporation shares currently shorted divided by the average quantity of Atlanticus Holdings Corporation shares traded daily (recently around 57587.836490528). Atlanticus Holdings Corporation's SIR currently stands at 10.03. In other words for every 100,000 Atlanticus Holdings Corporation shares traded daily on the market, roughly 10030 shares are currently held short.

However Atlanticus Holdings Corporation's short interest can also be evaluated against the total number of Atlanticus Holdings Corporation shares, or, against the total number of tradable Atlanticus Holdings Corporation shares (the shares that aren't held by "insiders" or major long-term shareholders – also known as the "float"). In this case Atlanticus Holdings Corporation's short interest could be expressed as 0.04% of the outstanding shares (for every 100,000 Atlanticus Holdings Corporation shares in existence, roughly 40 shares are currently held short) or 0.0829% of the tradable shares (for every 100,000 tradable Atlanticus Holdings Corporation shares, roughly 83 shares are currently held short).

A SIR above 10% would generally be considered pretty high, pointing to a potentially pessimistic outlook for the share price and a discouraging interest in betting against Atlanticus Holdings Corporation.

ATLC.US volatility(beta: 1.06)Avg. volatility(beta: 1.00)LowHigh

Beta is a measure of a share's volatility in relation to the market. The market (NASDAQ average) beta is 1, while Atlanticus Holdings Corporation's is 1.0574.
