From watching the lights turn on in your local town centre to tucking into a roast dinner, there’s nothing quite like Christmas in the UK. Finder surveyed Brits to find out how much Christmas spending will impact their bank accounts this year.

Christmas statistics: UK highlights

  • Over the Christmas period, Brits are projected to spend an impressive £41.6 billion in total, including gifts, food, travel and socialising according to Finder research. That’s £802 per person!
  • Brits are expected to spend an average of £514 each on Christmas gifts in 2025.
  • The UK plans to spend £26.7 billion on Christmas gifts in 2025, down from from £28.6 billion in 2025.
  • An estimated 52 million adults in the UK plan to buy Christmas gifts in 2024.

Overall, Finder’s research estimates that Brits will spend £41.6 billion during the Christmas period, including gifts, food, travel and more. This means an average spend of £802 per person!

What is the average spend on Christmas presents in the UK?

The average person in the UK plans to spend £514 on Christmas presents in 2024, according to Finder research. 94% of Brits plan to buy Christmas gifts for their loved ones, which is an impressive 52 million people.

The planned average spend per person is lower than in 2023 and 2024, perhaps suggesting that people are being more cautious this year while the UK’s inflation rate is climbing again.

The UK as a whole plans to spend £26.7 billion on Christmas gifts in 2025, down from a planned spend of £28.6 billion in 2024, a decrease of £1.9 billion (7%). This is the first time projected spending has seen a drop since 2022.

Christmas spending by generation: key statistics

Millennials (aged 29-44) are planning to go all out this Christmas, with an average spend of £1,011 each, including a whopping £617 on gifts. Generation Z is not far behind with an average total planned spend of £940 each (£585 on Christmas presents).

Next up is the silent generation, who plan to spend £865 in total, including £576 on gifts. Generation X are planning to spend £699 each (including £452 on presents), while Baby Boomers will be the most thrifty this Christmas, spending £577 each on average, and £416 on gifts.

Christmas spending by region: key statistics

People in London are planning to spend the most on Christmas festivities of all UK regions in 2025, with an estimated average of £1014 per person. They are followed by people in the North West of England, who are planning to spend £954 each, and people in Wales, who are planning to spend £910 per person.

Meanwhile, residents in the South West are hoping to be a bit more restrained with their Christmas celebrations, with an average planned spend of £556 per person, over £200 less than the national average.

Finder commissioned Censuswide to survey 2,000 UK adults (18+) between 14 and 17 November 2025. The nationally representative sample was quota’d by gender, age and region.
