Our verdict
Invest in crypto, precious metals and stocks in your IRA, but a $1,000 minimum is required to start.
iTrustCapital is a platform that lets you invest in cryptocurrencies, precious metals and, more recently, stocks and ETFs through your IRA. Crypto and precious metals trade 24/7, while stocks and ETFs follow standard market hours. There are no signup fees, no monthly account fees and no storage fees. It uses Fortis Bank to hold the self-directed IRAs and custody client assets. Fortis Bank works with storage providers Coinbase Custody, Fidelity Digital Assets and Fireblocks, where assets are secured through offline cold storage, regular audits and commercial crime insurance policies. Trade over 100 cryptocurrencies for a 1% fee on each side. Physical gold, silver and platinum all carry a premium over spot price that moves with market conditions, and stock and ETF trades carry no commission. iTrustCapital also offers a non-IRA account option (the Premium Custody Account) for trading digital assets, stocks and ETFs.
Best for: Crypto IRA investing.

iTrustCapital is best for crypto IRAs
While iTrustCapital also offers precious metals and stock and ETF trading, we think it’s best for crypto IRAs for these reasons:
- It offers a solid lineup of available cryptocurrencies.
- Its 1% crypto trade fee is on par with much of the competition.(1)
- Gold carries a premium over spot price that moves with market conditions.(2)

What we like about iTrustCapital
Multi-asset investing, all in one account
iTrustCapital is one of the few platforms that lets you invest in cryptocurrency, precious metals and stocks and ETFs, all within a single self-directed account. Choose from 100+ cryptocurrencies, physical gold, silver and platinum or more than 10,000 stocks and ETFs — a genuinely broad lineup for a platform built around crypto IRAs.(2),(3),(4) Crypto and precious metals trade 24/7; stock and ETF trades follow standard market hours.(4)
Low fees
There are no monthly, annual, setup, storage or transfer fees — including on precious metals held on the platform.(1),(2) Crypto trades cost 1% per side, and stock and ETF trades are commission-free — a combination that’s hard to beat among crypto IRA providers specifically.(4)
Flexible account options
iTrustCapital welcomes several types of IRA accounts, including Traditional, Roth and SEP IRAs, as well as TSP, 403(b) and 457 plans, that you can roll over or create anew.(5) Not everyone needs an IRA account, though — its Premium Custody Account (PCA) is a non-IRA option for the long-term investor. This taxable account allows users to buy and sell cryptocurrency, stocks and ETFs while benefiting from increased security and custody protections. You can skip the annual contribution limits associated with iTrustCapital IRA accounts, and there is no account fee.
Security and custody
iTrustCapital uses Fortis Bank as a Qualified Custodian to hold its digital assets, and its digital asset institutional storage partners include Coinbase Custody, Fidelity Digital Assets and Fireblocks.(5) Commercial crime insurance policies are in place as a further precaution.
Other security measures include offline cold storage and Multi-Party Computation (MPC). It has external firms that regularly conduct security and financial audits. One of its storage partners, Fireblocks, first earned SOC 2 Type II certification, audited by Ernst & Young, in 2019.(6),(7)
Where iTrustCapital falls short
No bonds or options trading
iTrustCapital recently added commission-free stock and ETF trading, but it still doesn’t offer bonds or options.(4) Stock and ETF trading also requires completing a separate brokerage account onboarding step on top of your existing iTrustCapital account, since those trades are handled by a third-party broker-dealer.(4)
No self-custody
So, what is iTrustCapital exactly? It is a software platform investors can use to buy and sell precious metals, cryptocurrency and, more recently, stocks and ETFs within an IRA — unlike popular brokerages such as Robinhood, it’s not a broker, and unlike Coinbase, it’s not a crypto exchange. It does not serve as a custodian, nor a licensed broker or dealer, and it is not regulated as one. All investor assets are held For the Benefit Of (FBO) its clients 1:1 off-balance sheet.
As an iTrustCapital investor, you do not get to choose your custodian or hold your own private keys. Instead, custody is chosen for you from one of the two main IRA custodians that iTrustCapital works with, including iTrust Custodial Services and Fortis Bank. For non-IRA accounts, third-party US-based custodians serve your account in accordance with the iTrustCapital Terms of Service. If direct control over your own crypto matters to you, this isn’t a self-custody platform.
$1,000 minimum investment
iTrustCapital requires a $1,000 minimum to open an account, which may be a barrier if you want to start small.(8)
iTrustCapital’s fees
iTrustCapital has made a name for itself as an affordable investing platform with its few fees. There are no monthly or annual fees, no startup fees and no storage fees.(1) You will not pay any transfer or exit fees, either. Standard withdrawals are also free, though in-kind crypto withdrawals of $10,000 or more carry a 0.5% fee, capped at $5,000.(8)
