What is SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust?

Launched in January 1993, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) was the very first exchange traded fund listed in the United States. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust is an exchange traded fund issued by State Street Global Advisors. It corresponds generally to the price and yield performance of the S&P 500 index. The S&P 500 index is a market capitalization-weighted stock market index of over 500 leading US companies in the most prominent industries of the US economy, traded on either the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) or Nasdaq.
