Shorting Sea shares

There are currently 27.8 million Sea shares held short by investors – that's known as Sea's "short interest". This figure is 1% up from 27.5 million last month.

There are a few different ways that this level of interest in shorting Sea shares can be evaluated.

Sea's "short interest ratio" (SIR)

Sea's "short interest ratio" (SIR) is the quantity of Sea shares currently shorted divided by the average quantity of Sea shares traded daily (recently around 3.8 million). Sea's SIR currently stands at 7.37. In other words for every 100,000 Sea shares traded daily on the market, roughly 7370 shares are currently held short.

However Sea's short interest can also be evaluated against the total number of Sea shares, or, against the total number of tradable Sea shares (the shares that aren't held by "insiders" or major long-term shareholders – also known as the "float"). In this case Sea's short interest could be expressed as 0.06% of the outstanding shares (for every 100,000 Sea shares in existence, roughly 60 shares are currently held short) or 0% of the tradable shares (for every 100,000 tradable Sea shares, roughly 0 shares are currently held short).

A SIR below 10% would generally be considered to indicate a fairly optimistic outlook for the share price, with fewer people currently willing to bet against Sea.

Sea share dividends

We're not expecting Sea to pay a dividend over the next 12 months.

Sea share price volatility

Over the last 12 months, Sea's shares have ranged in value from as little as $26.65 up to $176.9. A popular way to gauge a stock's volatility is its "beta".

SE.US volatility(beta: 1.43)Avg. volatility(beta: 1.00)LowHigh

Beta is a measure of a share's volatility in relation to the market. The market (NYSE average) beta is 1, while Sea's is 1.4309. This would suggest that Sea's shares are more volatile than the average for this exchange and represent, relatively-speaking, a higher risk (but potentially also market-beating returns).
