AA credit cards

Best-known for its fleet of bright yellow rescue vehicles, the AA relaunched its financial services arm in 2015 under a tie-up with the Bank of Ireland. However, it now no longer offers credit cards.

What is the AA?

The AA, or Automobile Association, was set up in June 1905 by a group of four London motorists, with the objective putting drivers’ interests first. In 2014 it was voted one of the UK’s most trusted brands in a BrandAsset Valuator survey.

AA credit cards are issued on the Mastercard network, so they can be used in more than 35 million places worldwide.

What types of credit card are available from AA?

The AA offers a very small range of just two basic credit cards, but each is designed to meet a specific need.

  • 0% balance transfer card

The AA offers its Balance Transfer Credit Card so that you can move existing expensive debt to a new card and pay no interest on it for a set introductory period – buying you a window to focus on paying it off. You’ll normally need to pay a balance transfer fee, typically 2-3% of the amount transferred.
Learn more about 0% balance transfer cards

  • Low rate card

The AA’s Low Rate Credit Card offers a competitive rate of interest on both purchases and balance transfers. This type of card can be a good option if you have an existing outstanding balance but also plan to make a significant purchase. You’ll be able to keep payments low and avoid having to pay an annual fee.
Learn more about low rate cards

Additional benefits of AA credit cards

  • Customer support. The AA operates a local call rate customer helpline with staff available between 8am and 8pm daily.
  • Online account management. You can register online to make payments, check the available balance on your card, update your details and carry out a range of other tasks involved in servicing your account.
  • Global usage. As part of the Mastercard network, you can use your AA credit card at more than three-quarters of all outlets worldwide, a figure that’s growing all the time.
  • Additional cards. You can nominate an additional cardholder, provided they live at the same address as that registered to you.
  • AA credit card app. The app is available through Google Play or Apple’s App Store, and lets you access all your account information via your mobile phone.

Applying for an AA credit card

You can apply for an AA credit card easily and conveniently online. It’s straightforward to check your eligibility and chances of being accepted using the AA’s online eligibility checker, which doesn’t affect your credit rating. Keep in mind that the eligibility checker is a guide – you’ll be subject to a full credit check when you apply.

Eligibility requirements

  • Be a UK resident
  • Be over 18 years old
  • Hold a UK bank or building society account
  • Not currently have any other credit card issued by the Bank of Ireland
  • Be employed, retired or a homemaker, with an annual income of over £8,000
  • Not have any outstanding County Court Judgments
  • You must ensure that you can meet the repayments as missed payments incur a charge and could have severe consequences on your ability to obtain future credit

Why might your application not be approved?

If you meet the broad criteria outlined above, but have a history of bad debt or no credit history, you could be rejected. Also, if you have been made the subject of a CCJ or have have ever declared bankruptcy, you are unlikely to be offered a card.
