If, like most SMEs, your business has a fairly irregular cash flow, then a business charge card can boost your spending power and offer some stability.

With a charge card, you're expected to pay your balance in full every month. Provided you do that, with this card you'll be able to take advantage of up to 54 days of 0% interest on purchases each billing cycle (although there are fees to pay if you fail to clear your balance). The benefits of charge cards include flexibility with payments (purchases at the start of the billing cycle are paid for at the end of the billing cycle) and, in many cases, rewards on your spending.

The primary benefits of this card include travel accident insurance up to £250,000 (subject to enrolment and provided you use your Gold Business Card to book your travel tickets) and the opportunity to earn Membership Rewards points as you spend (you'll also enjoy a hefty bonus on sign-up).

The option of additional cards enables you to extend benefits to colleagues and employees and easily keep track of business expenses. What's more, unlike some of its competitors, American Express won't charge you extra for additional cards.

Pros

Cons

  • Annual fee applies. Year 1 - £0, Year 2 onwards - £195
  • Applicants with low credit scores are unlikely to be eligible

Approval for any credit card depends on your status. The representative APRs shown represent the interest rate offered to most successful applicants. Depending on your personal circumstances, the APR you're offered may be higher, or you may not be offered credit at all. Fees and rates are subject to change without notice. How much does it cost to use the American Express Business Gold Card abroad?

Non-sterling transactions are subject to a 2.99% charge (which is very standard). For example, if you spend 200 euros (£168.69), it'll cost you around £5.04 in fees.

Can I get additional American Express Business Gold Cards for my team?

Yes, you can request up to 20 more. There's no fee for additional cards. Plus, with additional cards, you could earn points at a faster rate.

Our experts score business credit and charge cards to determine their value against similar products on the market. We look at a number of important factors, like the flexibility it offers, any rewards you can earn through company spending, account management tools, plus the potential costs involved with running the card both in the short and longer term.

You can read more about our scoring criteria on our credit card methodology page.

We show offers we can track - that's not every product on the market...yet. Unless we've said otherwise, products are in no particular order. The terms "best", "top", "cheap" (and variations of these) aren't ratings, though we always explain what's great about a product when we highlight it. This is subject to our terms of use. When you make major financial decisions, consider getting independent financial advice. Always consider your own circumstances when you compare products so you get what's right for you.
