What is RBS?

Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) offers a select range of credit cards for existing business customers. Opt for a more basic card or, for a higher fee, a card with additional features and appealing rewards.

RBS business cards features and benefits

While features, costs and benefits vary depending on the card you choose, the following points apply to all RBS business cards:

  • Interest-free credit. If you pay your balance in full each month, you won’t pay interest on your purchases. For businesses with fluctuating cash flows, this can offer stability and boost spending power.
  • Tailored credit limit. While RBS states a minimum credit limit of £500, the credit limit you’re offered will depend on factors like your company credit report, your turnover and how long you’ve been trading.
  • Flexible monthly repayments. You’ll be required to pay a minimum amount each month. Don’t forget that if you only pay the minimum figure, you’ll incur interest on your purchases from the day on which they were made, and it will take you longer to clear your balance.
  • Annual fees. Like most business cards, these do come with annual fees attached, which are calculated based on the number of cardholders. RBS will sometimes waive the fee in the first year, and/or in the following years if you spend at least £6,000 a year and meet other criteria.
  • Track spending in real time. With RBS’s free management tools including its mobile app and custom reports, you can monitor and analyse business spending in real time and access historical information too.

You must be an existing RBS business customer in order to apply.

How to compare RBS business cards

Here are some of the key factors to consider when weighing up which RBS business card is best for your needs:

  • Interest rate. If you’re likely to carry a balance from month-to-month, then the interest rate is going to be a primary focus.
  • Fees. Business cards usually come with an annual or monthly fee, and these are usually linked to the number of cardholders. Try to quantify the benefits you’ll get from the card, to see if the account fee is worth shouldering. Others to consider include foreign transaction fees and balance transfer fees.
  • Perks. If you’re going to be spending a fair bit on your business card, you might as well see if you can earn some rewards along the way. The more premium RBS cards come with the opportunity to earn cash back on all your spending.
  • Eligibility. Don’t waste your time looking into a card for which your company doesn’t meet the minimum eligibility requirements.

So, it’s ultimately all about knowing your business and planning your expenses. The perks are often the flip side of the fees, so ask yourself: will my business benefit enough to make the extra cost of a premium option worth it?
