Frequently asked questions
Why do banking apps offer sign-up deals?
Banks and banking apps offer sign-up deals to entice new customers. They’re happy to pay to acquire new customers because once an account is open they’re then able to offer other products to that new customer. It’s mutually beneficial, because customers get rewarded for trying (and sometimes continuing to use) a new app, while banks are able to incrase their customer base.
Are there any catches?
Sometimes there will be some extra hoops to jump through to get the bonus. This could be something like depositing a certain amount of money in the account and keeping it there for a certain amount of time or making a number of qualifying transactions. You may also need to offer a current account to access a savings account, or vice versa. Just make sure you’re aware of the eligibility criteria and be sure you can fulfil it.
Will a reward impact my credit score?
There normally isn’t an impact on your credit score just from accepting a sign-up bonus or earning rewards from your account. But if you’ve switched current accounts to get an offer or reward, there’s a chance this can temporarily affect your credit score. When you open a new account, banks normally do a hard credit search, which shows up on your credit file.
