After dutifully reading about the latest travel rule change as of 4 October, you've finally booked a holiday after what feels like decades of fantasising about one. Flights and accommodation are sorted, but you still need to sort the small matter of getting COVID-19 testing before you set off. With a lot of different providers to choose from, you're torn between jumping at the first one you see so you can tick the job off your list, but that might not be the wisest idea. It's better to do your research, and what luck, we can help.

What is Assured Screening?

Assured Screening is on the government’s list of COVID test providers and was set up in response to the pandemic to provide “swift and uncomplicated access to COVID-19 screening services throughout the UK”. It’s part of Honeyman Group Limited, which is a pharmaceutical, medical device and healthcare lab that has been in operation for over 30 years.

It operates a nationwide network of testing centres, using the most “technologically advanced COVID-19 testing instrumentation in the world” and the lab has the capacity to process up to 20,000 tests per day. Its tagline on site is “beating COVID together”, which is certainly reassuring.

What types of COVID-19 tests can I get from Assured Screening?

Assured Screening offers an at-home PCR test and a postal service, too. It covers general testing purposes, fit to fly, day 2 and day 8 international arrival tests and test to release. It also has drop box points, where you can return your test directly to the centres.

What is Assured Screening’s refund policy?

You’ll be refunded if you cancel an appointment up to 48 hours beforehand, but not any later than that. A returned test kit will incur a £25 deduction from your refund due to processing charges. Test kits must be unused and returned within 28 days of receiving them.

Assured Screening customer reviews

Looking at its Trustpilot page, Assured Screening has an average rating of 4.4 out of 5 based on over 13,000 reviews (last updated October 2021). Customers praised its timeliness, ease of ordering, helpful staff and correspondence, among other things.

Negative reviews are less common, but still present. One customer never received their results, while another felt the service was more expensive than they’d prefer. Overall, the reviews are largely positive.

Are Assured Screening tests accurate?

Assured Screening tests have a specificity of 99% and a sensitivity of 99.43%. As Assured Screening is on the government list of COVID test providers, it meets the minimum safety requirements to offer the service.

How long does it take to get results from Assured Screening?

For home tests, orders are despatched and delivered 7 days a week, and the package can be tracked. Once the lab has received your sample, results are usually available within 24 hours.

If you’re getting tested at a test centre, you should have the results before midnight on the following day for general testing, test to release and international departure testing. International arrivals testing should have results with you by midnight 2 days after the test. For example, if you test on a Monday, results should arrive by midnight on Wednesday.

How much do Assured Screening tests cost?

An at-home pre-departure PCR swab costs £89 while the in-clinic equivalent is £89. A home-testing bundle for day 2 and day 8 arrivals costs £99, and an individual day 2 home kit costs £45.

In clinics, the pre-departure PCR swab costs £89 and the post-return day 2 PCR costs £55.

Pros and cons of Assured Screening

Pros

  • Government-listed COVID-19 test provider
  • Straightforward ordering online
  • Informative website
  • Trackable postage

Cons

  • Instances of missing results mentioned in reviews
  • Slightly confusing price structure on site

Our verdict: Is Assured Screening any good?

Based on the customer reviews, people have had a largely positive experience with Assured Screening’s services. Negative reviews are in the minority, which is always a good sign.

It offers a competitive service and has pretty standard turnaround times. If you’re near one of its drop box locations, you may get a speedier turnaround by returning the test in-person as opposed to by post (although they don’t guarantee that).
