While the average restaurant produces 100,000 pounds of excess food every year, roughly only 1,400 pounds of that food is donated. Juxtapose these numbers with the one in eight Americans who face hunger, and it’s easy to see that more effort could be put forth to help eliminate food waste while also feeding those in need.
To help remedy this growing concern, food delivery service DoorDash is teaming up with tens of thousands of restaurants in more than 600 cities across the country to deliver food donations to nonprofit organizations who feed the hungry. This initiative, called Project DASH — DoorDash Acts for Sustainability and Hunger — has delivered over 1 million pounds of surplus food to those in need since its start in January 2018.
Order nowDoorDash uses its technology, logistics platforms and drivers to connect surplus food with charity organizations who help fight hunger. When a restaurant has excess food that can be donated, it is matched with a local hunger relief nonprofit.
DoorDash then assigns a nearby driver the task of transporting the surplus food from the restaurant to the nonprofit. The nonprofit organization is then able to serve more food to those in need, while the restaurant wastes less.
In addition, for every meal ordered through its website or app in the month of January, DoorDash will also donate one meal through Feeding America. So you can do your part simply by using DoorDash to get tasty food delivered to your door.
If you’re new to DoorDash, you won’t pay a delivery fee on any order over $10 for the first 30 days after creating an account. After that, the delivery fee is calculated at checkout based on the restaurant, your order amount and your location.
But if you order from DoorDash regularly, you could save by signing up for its paid membership program called DashPass, which gets you free delivery on orders over $12, plus a lower service fee. Read more about how DoorDash works in our review.
