Top destinations for Valentine’s Day weekend getaways

1. Venice, Italy

Filled with beautiful bridges, canals and baroque buildings, it’s hard to find a city more romantic than Venice. From going on a gondola ride to visiting St Mark’s Basilica or taking a trip to Murano, home of Venetian glass making, there’s plenty to keep you busy during a Valentine’s weekend trip in “The Floating City”.

Although there are plenty of great hotels to choose from, The Gritti Palace, located right on the Grand Canal, is our top pick for a more luxurious stay, offering magnificent views of the Santa Maria della Salute, an impressive 17th-century domed church.

2. Barcelona, Spain

Famous for its stunning architecture, museums and parks, Barcelona is the ideal city for a Valentine’s Day getaway. You can take in the renowned works of Antoni Gaudi during the day and dine at a rooftop restaurant in the evening.

Positioned on top of the Majestic Hotel and Spa, La Dolce Vitae is one of the more intimate options for fantastic panoramic views of the city. A helicopter tour is also a wonderful way to see the capital of Catalonia for those willing to splash out. However, a visit to Camp Nou, home stadium of FC Barcelona, will no doubt top every football fan’s must-see list.

3. Budapest, Hungary

Known as the “City of Spas,” Budapest is a great destination for those looking for a relaxing weekend getaway. There are at least 15 public thermal baths to choose from, with 118 natural hot springs providing them with water every day. The Szechenyi Baths are the largest and most popular baths in the city.

You can also pay a visit to the spectacular Buda Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or take a romantic cruise along the River Danube, which is Europe’s second longest river. Based in 19th-century mansion buildings, Kempinski Hotel Corvinus Budapest is a fabulous hotel for those looking to push the boat out during their stay.

4. Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh is the perfect setting for a romantic Valentine’s escape thanks to its majestic scenery, not to mention friendly locals. For unrivalled views of the city, take a hike up to Arthur’s Seat or go for a stroll around the iconic Edinburgh Castle.

If you’re prepared to splash out for a Valentine’s Day evening to remember, a candlelit meal at renowned restaurant The Witchery is difficult to top.

5. Lake District, England

When it comes to scenic UK destinations, the Lake District is in a league of its own. It’s a place so romantic, it inspired William Wordsworth’s most famous poem, “Daffodils”. From having a picnic along the lake shore, taking a boat cruise on Lake Windermere or going for a ride on a steam train, there are countless activities to choose from.

The Lake District also boasts several Michelin-starred restaurants. L’Enclume in Cartmel is one of the standouts and a great option for a special Valentine’s meal.

6. Paris, France

Dubbed the “City of Love”, Paris remains one of the most romantic cities in the world. Pay a visit to the Eiffel Tower around this time and you’ll likely witness at least one marriage proposal, while the Champagne Bar on the top floor is a good spot for drinks with a view.

If you’re looking for a restaurant that won’t cost the Earth, L’Encrier, located in the 12th district, is a wonderful hidden gem that serves up great traditional French food. A sunset cruise along the Seine should also be on your to-do list as well as a day trip to the stunning Palace of Versailles, renowned for its beautiful gardens.

7. Rome, Italy

Rome has always been synonymous with romance. With its ancient ruins, charming piazzas, cobbled streets and top restaurants, the Italian capital offers a Valentine’s Day weekend break like no other. You can rent a Vespa and zip around the streets with your loved one, or simply stroll around and take in the spectacular scenery on foot.

Why not pay a visit to the Trevi Fountain and take a picnic up to Aventine Hill for a romantic afternoon away from the crowds? As for accommodation, Relais Giulia, an understated 13-room boutique hotel, is a fantastic budget friendly option.

8. The Cotswolds, England

The beautiful Cotswolds have long been a popular choice for romantic UK getaways. This area is perfect for those seeking a weekend of long walks through the idyllic English countryside and pub lunches in quaint villages.

Nature lovers will be impressed with the various bird reserves and sanctuaries here. There are also plenty of impressive eateries on offer for a cosy meal for two, with the Michelin starred Le Champignon Sauvage, situated in Cheltenham, one of the most acclaimed.
