Zelle has become one of the most used mobile payment apps in the country — and for good reason. It lets you transfer money from one bank account to another within minutes just using an email address or phone number. As of 2025, over 100 million people have access to Zelle directly through their banking app, and more than 2,200 financial institutions support the peer-to-peer (P2P) payment service.
Bank of America’s banking app is integrated with Zelle. As long as you have an eligible Bank of America deposit account (consumer or business), you can enroll in Zelle in the bank’s own mobile app.
However, the person you’re sending money to or receiving money from must have a US bank account and be enrolled in Zelle for the transaction to go through.

Here’s how to set up Zelle and start sending and receiving money from your Bank of America mobile app:
Requesting money from your BofA mobile app using Zelle follows pretty much the same steps. But instead of selecting Pay, you’ll select Request.
If the person you’re sending money to or requesting money from doesn’t have Zelle yet, they’ll receive a text or email explaining how to get started. If they’re already enrolled, they’ll get a notification once the payment is sent and typically receive the money within minutes.
Yes. Zelle is free with Bank of America. There are zero fees to send or receive money with Zelle using BofA’s mobile app or online banking. That said, you’ll want to check your Deposit Agreement and Personal Schedule of Fees to see if there are any fees related to your deposit accounts.
For security, Bank of America restricts the number of transactions and the dollar amounts you can send in any daily, seven-day or 30-day period. The limit is also different for individual accounts and small business accounts.
Individuals
| Time Period | Dollar Amount | Total Payments |
|---|---|---|
| 24 hours | $3,500 | 10 |
| 7 days | $10,000 | 30 |
| 30 days | $20,000 | 60 |
Small Business
| Time Period | Dollar Amount | Total Payments |
|---|---|---|
| 24 hours | $15,000 | 20 |
| 7 days | $45,000 | 60 |
| 30 days | $60,000 | 120 |
Zelle doesn’t have a standalone app as of April 2025. Zelle is super convenient, but only for those with bank accounts in its program. Check out these other P2P payment apps if you want to explore other options:
You can use Zelle at Bank of America if you have an eligible Bank of America consumer or business deposit account. This means you could easily send and receive money from your BoA mobile app without having to download a separate app.
Don’t worry if you’re not a BofA customer yet. Bank of America isn’t the only bank that works with this mobile payment app — compare more top banks that support Zelle.
Both SoFi and Discover Bank are rewarding and free, but SoFi lets you invest online. The best bank for you will depend on what features are most important to you.
SoFi is better than Chase for savings and checking accounts, but Chase is the better pick for credit cards.
Some of the top alternatives to a SoFi bank account include Current, Varo, Axos, PNC, Ally, Discover, One and Greenlight.
SoFi and Capital One are both good picks for different reasons. SoFi is best for everyday banking, but Capital One has more account options and branches.
Ally is best for its savings products, while SoFi is best for its convenient checking and savings hybrid account. See pros and cons here.
Marcus offers top savings options, but if you want a full-service bank, go with SoFi.
Top online banks like Chime include SoFi, Varo, Current, Axos, Capital One, Step, Fizz and more. See how these Chime alternatives compare.
