May 30, 2025: The government is expected to sell off the last of its NatWest Group shares today or Monday, finally drawing a line under the 2008 bail-out of the high-street stalwart. At one point the treasury held an 80%+ stake in the group, but since 2021 it has been drip-feeding stocks back into the market. After dividends and fees, UK taxpayers will be around £10b down from the saga.
May 15, 2025: NatWest 's stock price hit a 10-year high as the government reduced its stake in the bank to below 1%. In Q1 of 2025 NatWest reported net loans to customers increased by £3.4b (0.9%) largely driven by mortgages, and Chief Exec. Paul Thwaite commented "we now expect to be at the upper end of our income and returns guidance for 2025".
