How much does the UK spend on spooky season each year?

Whether you don a scary outfit or just hand out sweets to trick-or-treaters, there’s no escaping Halloween. We looked into how much money is spent on Halloween from our bank accounts in the UK each year.

  • Halloween spending in the UK is projected to reach £779 million in 2025.
  • 55% of Brits plan to make a Halloween purchase, with an average planned spend of £26 per person.

How much do we spend on Halloween in the UK?

Brits are expected to spend £779 million on Halloween in 2025, according to a recent Finder survey. More than half of people (55%) are planning to spend some money on celebrations, decorations or costumes, with an average spend of £26 per person.

However, lots of us are still making sure to cut costs this October. While £26 is the average spend, 3 in 5 Brits (63%) plan to spend less than £20 or nothing at all for Halloween.

Which generation spends the most on Halloween?

Generation Z and millennials (aged 18-44) are the most involved generations when it comes to Halloween spending. In 2025, 4 in 5 gen Z-ers and millennials (80%) are planning to put at least some money towards the event, whether that’s decorations, costumes or general celebrations.

Millennials are the biggest spenders, with the average member shelling out £50 for spooky season! Gen Z are planning to be a bit more thrifty, with an average planned spend of £37.

The enthusiasm for Halloween seems to decrease with age, however, as just a quarter (24%) of baby boomers (aged 61-79) and 16% of the silent generation (aged 80+) expect to make a spooky purchase. Gen X (aged 45-60) sit somewhere in the middle, with just under half of this group (48%) planning to spend £16 each on average.

Which region spends the most on Halloween?

Those in London are planning to spend big this Halloween, with 3 in 5 (63%) planning to spend an average of £36 each. They are joined by residents in Northern Ireland, who are also planning to spend a significant amount on Halloween this year. 64% are planning to splash out, with an average spend of £33.

Meanwhile, those in Wales and the South East of England are least likely to engage in Halloween spending. Just 45% of Welsh residents plan to spend £19 each on average, while 48% of those in the South East plan to spend £20 each. Similarly, only 53% of those in the South West, with the lowest planned spend of all regions – at just £18.

How has Halloween spending changed over time?

In 2020, it was expected that UK residents would spend £536 million on Halloween. This has increased significantly in the 5 years since, despite the recent cost of living crisis, with the UK now projected to spend 45% more in 2025, with a total of £779 million.

Methodology

Finder commissioned Censuswide to survey 2,000 UK adults (18+) between 1 and 6 October 2025. The nationally representative sample was quota’d by gender, age and region.
