Key takeaways
- Earning fast and getting paid fast aren’t the same thing. Some options put cash in your hand at the handoff, while GPT apps and gig platforms can make you clear ID checks or a cash-out minimum first.
- Selling something is the surest one-hour payout. A local sale, an old phone at an ecoATM or clothes to a resale shop all pay on the spot, with no approval needed.
- Have a backup for true emergencies. If you need money before any of these pay out, a cash advance app can bridge the gap without the cost of a payday loan.
Short on cash and short on time? You don’t need a loan to cover a small gap. Plenty of legit options can put money in your pocket today, but there’s a catch most lists skip: earning money in an hour and getting paid in an hour aren’t the same thing. Some apps need approval first, and some make you hit a cash-out minimum.
So for every option below, we show you what it pays, how fast the money actually lands and what you need to set up in advance. If you’ve got a little more time, our guide to ways to make money fast covers options that pay out within a few days.

1. Use get-paid-to (GPT) apps
How much you can earn in one hour: It varies by offer. None of the platforms we show as examples publishes a standard hourly rate, and most pay in points or coins you convert to cash or gift cards. So you may be able to earn money within the hour, but you may not be able to cash out within the hour.
How fast you get paid: Usually not within the hour. Freecash says new users can start earning in 30 minutes and cash out in three hours, but your first withdrawal requires ID verification and a minimum balance of up to $20, depending on your region. After that first cash-out, you only need enough for your payout method, such as $5 for PayPal. Swagbucks says to allow up to 10 business days for gift cards and PayPal transfers to arrive.
How it works: GPT apps like Freecash pay you to play games, try new apps and take surveys. Scrambly and Swagbucks are other popular options. If you’d rather stick to questionnaires, you could try earning money through surveys or if playing is more your speed, there are game apps that pay real money. They won’t make you rich, but you can start from your couch with nothing more than a phone.
Tips to succeed
- Check the cash-out rules first. If speed is the goal, pick a money-making app with a low first withdrawal and fast payouts.
- Install through the app’s link. Freecash says completed offers only pay out when it tracks the install through its link.
- Read game offer fine print. Game offers often require reaching a set level within a time limit, so check the deadline before you start.

2. Sell your stuff locally
How much you can earn in one hour: It depends on what you’re selling. A game console, bike or piece of furniture can bring in far more than an hour of gig work.
How fast you get paid: At the handoff, if you meet a local buyer and take cash or an instant payment.
How it works: List items you no longer use on Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp or a similar local marketplace, then meet the buyer. Taking a few good photos and writing a clear description is the only setup you need.
Tips to succeed
- Price with sold listings. Check what similar items recently sold for, not just what sellers are asking, so you can price to move.
- Ask for payment before you hand it over. Cash or an instant payment at the meetup avoids waiting on a buyer.
- Meet somewhere busy and public. It’s safer for you and the buyer.

3. Sell clothes to a resale shop
How much you can earn in one hour: At Buffalo Exchange for example, you walk away with 25% of the store’s selling price in cash or 50% in store credit for anything it buys.
How fast you get paid: The same day. Buffalo Exchange says there’s no need to wait for your items to sell.
How it works: Bring your clothes, shoes and accessories to a resale shop. A buyer picks out what the store can resell and tells you your cash and trade options. Buffalo Exchange buys from open to close every day with no appointment needed, but you’ll need a valid government-issued ID like a driver’s license or passport.
Tips to succeed
- Check condition first. Buffalo Exchange says every item it buys goes straight onto the rack, so it looks for clean clothing in good condition.
- Ask your buyer why. Buffalo Exchange says style is its most important deciding factor, and buyers are happy to explain what they take and pass on.
- Mix cash and credit. You can take any combination of cash and trade, so use credit for something you need and take the rest in cash.
4. Sell an old phone at an ecoATM kiosk
How much you can earn in one hour: It depends on your phone’s make, model, condition and market value. You can get a price estimate on ecoATM’s website before you go.
How fast you get paid: On the spot, in cash, Venmo or PayPal. ecoATM says selling a phone takes about seven minutes.
How it works: Get an online offer and lock it in for seven days, or get an offer right at the kiosk. You connect your phone, the kiosk checks its condition and you accept or decline. ecoATM accepts damaged phones, though damage lowers the offer.
Tips to succeed
- Bring an unexpired state ID. You must be 18 or older, and ecoATM doesn’t accept passports or paper IDs.
- Sign out of iCloud. ecoATM can’t buy devices with activation lock turned on.
- Charge it first. Phones that don’t turn on may get less than the original offer. ecoATM also can’t buy financed phones you still owe on.
5. Cash out small gift card balances, or sell the whole card
How much you can earn in one hour: In states like California, you can get the full balance on any gift card worth less than $15. On gift card exchange sites, less than face value — CardCash says it pays up to 92% of a card’s value.
How fast you get paid: CardCash for example, says payments typically go out within one to two days of order approval, by check, ACH deposit or PayPal.
How it works: If you have gift cards you won’t use, you can cash them out or sell them. Some states require retailers to pay out small leftover balances in cash, so ask at the register or check your state’s rules. For cards with bigger balances, gift card exchange sites like CardCash give you a quote before you sell, so you know what you’ll get.
Tips to succeed
- Round up your stragglers. A few cards with $5–$14 left on them can add up fast.
- Compare offers. Exchange site payouts vary by retailer, so get quotes from more than one site.
- Stick to established sites. Never share a gift card number with someone who contacts you first.
6. Take paid research studies
How much you can earn in one hour: At least $8 an hour on Prolific, which is the platform’s minimum. Prolific recommends researchers pay $12 an hour or more.
How fast you get paid: Once the researcher approves your submission. Prolific says that usually happens within a few days, and it automatically approves any submission a researcher hasn’t reviewed within 22 days. You can cash out to PayPal once your balance reaches $6, and Prolific says the money arrives within 24 hours.
How it works: Prolific connects researchers with everyday people who complete surveys and studies. Unlike points-based survey apps, studies pay a set reward, and Prolific calculates the effective hourly rate from the median actual completion time, not just the researcher’s estimate.
Tips to succeed
- Check the actual hourly rate. Prolific shows both the intended and actual hourly reward on each study.
- Report underpaying studies. Use the “Report study” button. Prolific says researchers have 22 days to fix underpaying studies.
- Pair it with surveys. Our guide to earning money through surveys covers the best sites to run alongside it.
7. Do odd jobs on TaskRabbit
How much you can earn in one hour: Whatever you charge. TaskRabbit says Taskers always take home 100% of the hourly rate they set plus all tips, clients pay the platform’s service fee on top.
How fast you get paid: By direct deposit to a checking account. TaskRabbit doesn’t accept savings accounts or prepaid cards.
How it works: People book Taskers for jobs like furniture assembly, TV mounting, moving help and errands. It’s a strong one-hour option once you’re set up, but you can’t start instantly. You need to be at least 18, work in one of TaskRabbit’s active US cities, have a US Social Security number, pass a background and ID check and have a checking account, a valid credit card and a smartphone. There’s also a one-time, nonrefundable $25 registration fee.
Tips to succeed
- Use the pricing guidance. The app suggests rates based on your metro, task category and experience level, and TaskRabbit says Taskers who set competitive rates make more.
- Keep your availability open. TaskRabbit says reviews and availability affect your ranking in search results.
- Start with popular tasks. Furniture assembly and TV mounting top TaskRabbit’s list of popular tasks.
8. Deliver food and groceries
How much you can earn in one hour: It depends on the app, your city and how busy it is. Most delivery apps pay per order and show you what you’ll earn before you accept. On DoorDash, for example, base pay ranges from $2 to $10 or more per offer, and you keep 100% of customer tips.
How fast you get paid: Most delivery apps pay weekly by direct deposit, with faster cash-out options if you can’t wait. DoorDash, for example, lets you cash out once a day with Fast Pay for $1.99, or get instant deposits with no fee through a DoorDash Crimson account.
How it works: Sign up with an app like DoorDash, Uber Eats or Instacart, wait for approval, then accept orders during the hours you choose. Approval is the catch, DoorDash says most Dashers start earning within days, so this only works as a one-hour option once you’re set up. Requirements vary by app, but expect a minimum age, a background check and a driver’s license if you’re delivering by car.
Tips to succeed
- Work mealtimes. DoorDash says lunch and dinner tend to be the busiest times of day.
- Check for promotions before you start. On DoorDash, the Promos tab shows whether Peak Pay is active near you.
- Head where it’s busy. DoorDash, for example, says positioning yourself near the red Hotspot zones on your map reduces idle time between offers.
- Sign up for more than one app. If one app is slow in your area, you can switch to another instead of waiting.

9. Walk dogs
How much you can earn in one hour: You typically set your own rates, and the app takes a cut. On Rover, for example, most sitters take home 80% of what they earn after Rover’s 20% service fee. For context, the median hourly wage for animal caretakers was $17.00 in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey, though that survey doesn’t include the self-employed.
How fast you get paid: It depends on the app. Rover, for example, sends your earnings by direct deposit two days after you complete a walk.
How it works: Dog walking apps like Rover and Wag connect you with pet owners who need a walk, drop-in visit or overnight care. A single walk fits neatly into a free hour, and happy clients often rebook. Some apps charge a one-time fee to review your profile before you can start — Rover’s is $49–$79, depending on your location. You can also skip the apps and offer walks to neighbors directly.
Tips to succeed
- Walk more than one dog. Two back-to-back 30-minute walks — or two dogs from the same home, boosts what you earn per hour.
- Offer recurring walks. Regular weekday clients make your income more predictable.
- Build reviews first. Competitive starting rates help you land early bookings and reviews, then you can raise prices.

10. Do yard work
How much you can earn in one hour: The median hourly wage for landscaping and groundskeeping workers was $18.82 in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey. That survey doesn’t include the self-employed, so you set your own price when you work for neighbors directly.
How fast you get paid: On your terms. Ask for cash or an instant payment when you finish.
How it works: Offer to mow lawns, rake leaves, pull weeds, clear gutters or shovel snow for people in your neighborhood. No app or approval needed, just a knock on the door or a post in a local community group.
Tips to succeed
- Stay close to home. Clustering jobs on one street cuts travel time and keeps your hourly rate up.
- Price by the job. A flat price per lawn rewards you for working fast.
- Mention your other skills. Offer to handle small fixes or haul junk while you’re there.
11. Babysit
How much you can earn in one hour: The median hourly wage for childcare workers was $16.82 in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey. That survey doesn’t include the self-employed or people hired directly by households, so private babysitters set their own rates.
How fast you get paid: When the parents get home, if you agree on cash or an instant payment up front.
How it works: Parents often need a sitter for an hour or two, during an appointment, a date night or a school pickup gap. Let friends, neighbors and local parent groups know you’re available on short notice.
Tips to succeed
- Get certified. A CPR and first aid class can make parents more comfortable booking you last minute.
- Be the “short-notice” sitter. Parents remember who can say yes the same day.
- Agree on pay before you start. Settle your rate and payment method so there’s no awkwardness at the door.
12. Return bottles and cans
How much you can earn in one hour: A few cents per container, depending on your state. In California, for example, the refund is 5 cents for containers under 24 ounces and 10 cents for containers 24 ounces or larger.
How fast you get paid: On the spot at a recycling center or participating retailer.
How it works: Only 10 states have a beverage container deposit law, according to Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy. If you live in one of them, you pay a small deposit when you buy a drink and get it back when you return the empty container. Got bags of empties in the garage, or friends who’ll give you theirs? An hour at a redemption center adds up. Rules on what counts, where to return and how much you can redeem at once vary by state, so check your state’s program before you go.
Tips to succeed
- Bring only eligible containers. Check that each one shows your state’s refund value. In California, for example, recycling centers can reject a load mixed with non-CRV items.
- Check for daily limits. Some states let retailers cap refunds. Michigan retailers, for example, only have to accept up to $25 per person per day.
- Keep them clean and dry. Rinse out leftover drinks before you go, and don’t crush containers if your state uses machines that scan bar codes.
13. Search for unclaimed money
How much you can earn in one hour: Anywhere from nothing to a meaningful windfall. Roughly one in seven Americans have unclaimed property, and the median claim paid through MissingMoney.com was $100 in fiscal year 2024, according to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators.
How fast you get paid: Searching takes minutes, but claim processing times vary by state.
How it works: When a company can’t find the owner of property like an uncashed paycheck, stocks and bonds or the contents of a safe deposit box, it turns it over to the state. Search your name for free on MissingMoney.com or find your state’s program through unclaimed.org.
Tips to succeed
- Search every state you’ve lived in. Each state runs its own unclaimed property program.
- Try name variations. Include maiden names, nicknames and common misspellings.
- Never pay to search. NAUPA says there’s never a cost to retrieve your unclaimed property.

What are the best ways to make money in one hour?
It depends on whether you need the most money, the fastest payout or the easiest start.
- Easiest to start from home: GPT apps and research studies. You can sign up and start earning right away, but expect small amounts and cash-out rules.
- Fastest cash in hand: Selling something locally, selling clothes to a resale shop, selling a phone at an ecoATM or returning bottles and cans. All four can pay you on the spot.
- Highest potential: Selling a higher-value item. One sale can beat several hours of gig work.
- Best if you’re already set up: TaskRabbit, DoorDash and Rover. They need approval first, but once you’re in, they’re a reliable way to turn a free hour into paid work.
If you have more than an hour to work with, you may consider a true side hustle like re-selling items, bookkeeping or online tutoring.
What to watch out for
- Task scams. Be wary of unexpected WhatsApp, Telegram, text or social media messages offering “optimization” or “product boosting” work. The Federal Trade Commission says these scams may pay you $5–$20 at first to gain your trust, then ask you to deposit your own money — usually in crypto — to unlock “earnings” that are fake.
- Paying to get paid. The FTC calls paying anyone to get paid or to get a job a sure sign of a scam. Some legit platforms charge a one-time signup fee — TaskRabbit’s is $25 and Rover’s profile review fee is $49–$79 — so read the terms before you pay anything.
- Taxes. Income from side jobs and selling goods or services is still generally taxable, even if you don’t get a Form 1099-K, according to the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service.
Need cash faster? A cash advance app may help
If none of these options gets you enough money in time, a cash advance app can front you part of your next paycheck. Expect to link your bank account and verify your income first, and to start small. EarnIn, for example, says new users get an $85 daily max on average. Free transfers can take one to three days, so getting your money fast usually costs extra, and repayment comes out of your bank account automatically on payday, according to the CFPB.
Some apps also work with gig income, so if you drive or deliver for a living, check out our picks for cash advance apps for gig workers.
