Our verdict

Upside pays real cash back on gas, groceries and dining, but its Terms give it more room on cash-out minimums and expiration than its marketing suggests.

Upside is a free cashback app from Upside Services, Inc. that pays you back when you claim an offer and then buy gas, groceries or a meal in person at a participating store. Its users have earned more than $1 billion in cash back, and frequent users average $255 in their first year, according to its homepage. It's one of the few money-making apps that pays you for spending you do anyway.

The catch is in the fine print. Upside's How It Works page promises no minimums and no hidden fees, but its help center charges $1 on bank cash-outs under $10, and its Terms of Service let it set a cash-out minimum of up to $20. Its help center also says your cash back never expires, while its Terms say it expires after six months of inactivity. Cash out regularly and keep your receipts.

Best for: Drivers and families who already shop at Upside's partner gas stations, grocers and restaurants.

Pros

  • Free cash back on gas, groceries and dining

  • Terms allow a cash-out minimum of up to $20
  • Terms say rewards expire after six inactive months
  • PayPal cash-outs dropped for most accounts

Is Upside legit?

Yes, Upside is a legitimate cashback app run by Upside Services, Inc., based at 455 Massachusetts Avenue NW in Washington, DC, according to its website footer and Terms of Service. Its users have earned more than $1 billion in cash back at more than 100,000 participating stores.

Retailers fund the offers, and Upside says it has a direct partnership with every business on the app. It also says it doesn’t sell your personal information, and it only sees the first six and last four digits of the cards you link, according to its How It Works page and help center.

What makes Upside shine?

  • Real cash, not points. You can cash out to your bank account or pick from gift cards at popular retailers.
  • Stacks with rewards you already earn. Upside says you can use it on top of your credit card, debit card and loyalty rewards.
  • Big-name partners. More than 100,000 stores fund offers on Upside, and its homepage lists brands like Shell, BP, Circle K, Casey’s, Marathon, Valero, Giant Eagle, Schnucks, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and Domino’s.
  • Solid average returns on food. Upside users earn an average of 8% cash back on grocery and dining purchases.
  • Instant cash back at select stores. Pay with Upside lets you earn in minutes instead of days.
  • Free to use. Upside’s Terms of Service describe the service as completely free.

Where Upside falls short

  • “No minimums” isn’t locked in. Upside’s How It Works page promises no minimums and no hidden fees, but its help center charges $1 on bank cash-outs under $10 and its Terms let it set a minimum of up to $20.
  • Mixed messages on expiration. Upside’s help center says cash back never expires while your account is in good standing, but its Terms say rewards expire after six consecutive months without earning or redeeming.
  • PayPal is mostly gone. Upside dropped ongoing PayPal support in late 2025 for anyone who hadn’t cashed out through PayPal before, according to its help center, though its homepage still mentions PayPal.
  • Strict claim rules. You have to claim an offer before you buy, finish your purchase within the offer window and pay with a card saved in your Upside Wallet.
  • Some purchases don’t count. Tips, sales tax, lottery tickets, tobacco, prescriptions, gift cards, alcohol bought at convenience stores and orders through delivery apps like DoorDash don’t earn cash back.
  • Credits can be slow or denied. Most offers process in three to four days but some take up to 10, and Upside’s Terms say it doesn’t have to pay you if it can’t validate your purchase within 10 days.
  • Gas prices in the app may be off. Upside’s Terms say the gas prices it displays aren’t always current or accurate.
  • Your balance isn’t safe until you cash out. Upside can suspend or terminate your account at its sole discretion, termination forfeits your cash back and your balance isn’t FDIC-insured, per its Terms.

How to sign up for Upside

  1. Download the free Upside app from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Create your account. If someone referred you, enter their invite code as a promo code before you claim your first offer.
  3. Add the credit or debit card you’ll pay with to your Upside Wallet.
  4. Claim an offer near you and make your purchase before the offer window closes.
  5. Check in or upload your receipt, depending on what the offer asks for.
  6. Cash out to your bank account or a gift card.

How do you earn money on Upside?

Here are the main ways to earn, according to Upside’s website and help center:

  • Fill up on gas. Claim a gas offer, then buy within four hours at stations like Shell, BP, Circle K, Marathon or Sunoco.
  • Buy groceries. Grocery offers give you 24 hours to shop, and Upside removes items like tobacco, prescriptions and sales tax from the total before it calculates your cash back.
  • Eat out. Restaurant offers give you four hours, but orders through delivery apps like DoorDash or Uber Eats don’t count.
  • Use Pay with Upside. At select stores, you scan a barcode or QR code from the app at checkout and earn cash back in minutes — behind the scenes, you’re buying a merchant gift card for the exact purchase amount, per its Terms.
  • Refer friends. When a friend uses your invite code and makes a first purchase of $10 or more before tax and tip, you each get an extra 15¢/gal on your next gas purchase, according to Upside’s help center.

Upside works for in-person purchases only, so it pairs well with money-making apps that pay instantly if you want to earn from your phone too.

Tips to get more out of Upside

  • Claim before you pay. Offers expire if you don’t buy within the window, four hours for gas and restaurants and 24 hours for groceries.
  • Pay with a card in your Wallet. Upside verifies purchases with the card you used, so add it to the app before you shop.
  • Keep receipts for at least 11 days. If cash back hasn’t shown up after 11 days, Upside asks you to send proof of purchase, like a receipt or bank statement screenshot.
  • Skip the $1 cash-out fee. Cash out $10 or more to your bank, or refer one friend who actively uses the app, and Upside waives the fee, per its help center.
  • Don’t let your account sit idle. Upside’s Terms say rewards expire after six months with no earning or redeeming.
  • Stick to one account and your own purchases. Upside’s Terms ban multiple accounts and claiming other people’s purchases, and either can cost you your balance.

Upside reviews and complaints

BBB accredited Yes
BBB rating A+
BBB customer reviews 1.36 out of 5 stars, based on 75 customer reviews
Trustpilot Score 4.1 out of 5 stars, based on 1,370 customer reviews
App Store Score 4.8 out of 5 stars, based on 690,000 customer reviews
Google Play Score 4.6 out of 5 stars, based on 457,000 customer reviews
Customer reviews verified as of 06 November 2026

Upside’s A+ BBB rating reflects how it handles complaints, not customer satisfaction. The BBB says it publishes only one in every 10 complaints it handles for Upside because of the high volume.

Positive reviews say Upside is easy to use for regular fill-ups and that support credits missing purchases when you send a receipt. Negative reviews center on purchases stuck in “needs review,” rejected receipts, offers that drop to a cent or two per gallon or 1% on groceries after the first few uses and gas prices in the app that don’t match the pump. Some Trustpilot reviewers also say Upside paid less than advertised when they used a gas station’s own loyalty program.

What do people on Reddit say?

Reddit users mostly say Upside pays, but timing depends on the station. In a 2025 r/GetUpside thread, a newer user said credits routinely took more than 10 days instead of the two to four days the app showed. Commenters said you can file a support form with your receipt after 10 days and get paid. Several said speed varies by chain — one said Circle K usually credits by the next day, while others described slow or failed credits at BP and Marathon and said they’d stopped using stations that failed often.

How does Upside make money?

Retailers fund the offers on Upside to win new customers and more trips, according to its How It Works page. When Upside brings a store an extra visit, the store shares part of that profit with Upside, and part of it pays for your cash back, according to Upside’s blog. If you would’ve shopped there anyway, Upside says it funds the offer itself.

How does Upside pay you?

Upside adds cash back to your balance once it validates your purchase. Then you can cash out through:

  • Bank transfer. A $1 fee applies under $10 unless you’ve referred an active user, and deposits take five to seven business days, per its help center.
  • Gift cards. There’s no fee, though some brands set their own minimums, and Upside’s website shows options like Amazon, Starbucks and The Home Depot.
  • PayPal. It’s only available for accounts that have cashed out through PayPal before, per its help center.

Most requests process within 24–48 hours, according to Upside’s help center, though its Terms allow up to 10 business days. Upside uses a payment company called Dwolla for bank transfers. Your balance doesn’t earn interest and isn’t FDIC-insured, so cash out regularly.

Since credits can take up to 10 days to land, Upside is better for trimming everyday costs than for making money fast. It’s one of many ways to make money online that reward spending you do anyway.
