The wait between seasons of Game of Thrones always feels like a lifetime (spare a thought for fans of the books), and the rumour mill is already working overtime in advance of the eighth and final season.

Where can I watch Game of Thrones (GoT) online for free

There is no legal way to watch Game of Thrones for free online in the UK. But you can watch it for a low cost with Sky’s streaming service, NOW, or at a low cost per episode from Amazon Prime.

As of June 2018, subscribers to NOW are able to watch episodes of Game of Thrones whenever it suits them. When you subscribe to NOW, you can register four devices and watch on up to two at the same time, so you can even enjoy episodes on the go. To watch Game of Thrones on NOW you will need to subscribe to its Entertainment Pass at £14.99 a month. There’s no contract, so there’s no commitment and you can cancel at any time. Needless to say you don’t just get Game of Thrones – the pass gives you access to a number of live channels which aren’t available on Freeview, like Sky 1, Sky Atlantic, Sky Living, FOX, MTV and Viceland, plus over 300 box sets on demand.

Another popular option is Amazon. Although Game of Thrones is not currently included in Amazon Prime Video (which is free to Amazon Prime members or can be subscribed to separately), the good news is that Amazon Instant Video does have Game of Thrones, and anybody can buy it by the episode (HD for £2.49) or a series at a time (prices vary, around £15). Alternatively, you can catch the whole show on iTunes (HD for £2.49) or Google Play (SD for £1.99).

Is Game of Thrones available in other countries on Netflix?

Currently Game of Thrones is not on Netflix no matter which country you are accessing the service in.

What is NOW?

The service works similarly to other streaming services like Netflix in that you stream video content directly through your internet connection, but with NOW you can be more selective about what you pay for – an Entertainment Pass will give you access to a large catalogue of TV shows while Cinema, Sports and Kids passes are available separately.

There’s also the option to buy a NOW box, the perfect option for those who don’t already have a smart TV but prefer to watch on a bigger screen. Priced from £14.99, this device links with your NOW Pass and makes it possible to stream live, catch-up and on-demand content on your TV at home.

Why don’t other services offer Game of Thrones?

Since 2010, Sky has owned exclusive UK and Irish rights to the entire HBO archive, including new programming. So not only does Sky broadcast some of the nation’s favourite TV shows through the Sky Atlantic channel, but the Sky-powered streaming service NOW tends to get Game of Thrones episodes as they’re released.

Unfortunately, subscribers to other TV providers like BT TV and Virgin Media are unable to view the Sky Atlantic channel. There’s no need to worry, however, as NOW is available to everyone and accessible on a variety of devices, including smart TVs.

Does this essentially mean that as of now (1st September) there is no legal way to watch game of thrones season 7 from the beginning? Now TV is no longer showing episodes 1-3. More than happy to pay to legally watch it but if there’s no option to do so for however many months then it’s no surprise people download.
