Our verdict
A 0% APR cash advance up to $500 from Upgrade's fintech platform — but you'll need a Boost Money Spend account and qualifying direct deposits to access it.

Advances start at $20 and can grow to $500 over time based on repayment history and direct deposit activity. There's no interest and no required fees on the advance itself, though faster delivery requires a Premium subscription, which costs $9.99 per month. Not available in all states.

Is Upgrade legit?
Upgrade is a San Francisco-based fintech founded in 2017 with offices in Phoenix, Montreal, Atlanta and Irvine. It carries an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and has delivered over $45 billion in credit to more than 7.5 million customers. Its products, including BoostCash, are provided through bank partners. Upgrade is a financial technology company, not a bank.

What makes BoostCash shine?
- 0% APR, no required fees. BoostCash advances carry a 0% APR with no required fees attached —cash advances are a great alternative to payday loans or credit card cash advances, which can carry triple-digit APRs and start accruing interest immediately.
- Limits grow over time. You start with access to as little as $20, but your limit can increase to $500 based on positive repayment history and direct deposit activity. To reach the $250 to $500 range, you’ll need qualifying direct deposits going specifically into your Boost Money Spend account.
- More than just cash advances. BoostCash lives inside the Boost Money platform, which also includes early paycheck access (up to two days early), a secured credit builder card that reports to all three major credit bureaus and no overdraft or monthly maintenance fees.
- Premium perks for $9.99/month. Upgrading to Premium unlocks express delivery (within minutes vs. three to five business days), faster limit increases, fee-free same-day bank transfers, VIP customer service, identity theft protection up to $15K and retail and travel protection benefits.
Where BoostCash falls short
- You must open a Boost Money Spend account first. BoostCash isn’t a standalone app. It requires an open Boost Money Spend account in good standing. If you just want a quick advance without opening a new account, this is a real barrier. Boost Money is Upgrade’s broader mobile banking platform. BoostCash is the cash advance feature within it — don’t confuse it with Boost Money Save, which is a separate savings account.
- Standard delivery is slow. Without Premium, advances arrive in three to five business days via ACH. Express delivery (within minutes) costs $9.99 per month.
- One advance at a time, and not in every state. You have to repay your current advance before taking out a new one, and BoostCash isn’t available in all states — see the eligibility section below.
- Low starting limits. Initial advances start at $20, which may not cut it in a pinch. Limits build over time, but that takes patience.

How to qualify for BoostCash
Upgrade is transparent about its eligibility requirements. To qualify, you need to:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have an open Boost Money Spend account (and any other Upgrade accounts) in good standing
- Have a history of eligible direct deposits of at least $200 from an employer, payroll provider, gig economy payer or qualifying ACH source — either linked from an external account or received directly into your Boost Money Spend account
- Live in an eligible state
To qualify for the $250 to $500 range, direct deposits must go into your Boost Money Spend account. Your limit can increase over time with positive repayment history and ongoing deposit activity.
BoostCash is available in most states. As of February 2026, it is not available in: Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, Washington, Wisconsin or Washington DC. Upgrade notes that it’s working to expand coverage.
Other features
The Boost Money Spend account comes with a few extras beyond cash advances:
- Boost Money Card. A secured Visa credit card that reports on-time payments to all three major credit bureaus to help build credit over time. Applying doesn’t affect your credit score, but activating the card may trigger a hard inquiry.
- Early paycheck access. Get paid up to two days early with direct deposit.
- Boost Money Save. An optional high-yield savings account — 1.50% APY on the free tier or 10% APY on balances up to $1,000 with Premium ($9.99/month). APY is variable.

| BBB accredited | Yes |
|---|---|
| BBB rating | A+ |
| BBB customer reviews | 4.27 out of 5 stars, based on 933 customer reviews |
| BBB customer complaints | 1,237 customer complaints |
| Trustpilot Score | 4.6 out of 5 stars, based on 54,884 customer reviews |

These ratings reflect Upgrade as a company. BoostCash only launched in March 2026, so product-specific reviews don’t exist yet. Overall sentiment across platforms is positive, with customers frequently praising fast approvals and an easy process.
Complaints tend to involve credit reporting delays and payment processing issues on Upgrade’s lending products, which aren’t directly relevant to a no-fee, 0% APR cash advance.
What do people on Reddit say?
That said, Upgrade as a company does come up occasionally, mostly in the context of their personal loan product, and the general consensus is that Upgrade is a legitimate, well-run fintech that delivers on what it promises.
Compare BoostCash to other apps
BoostCash stands out for its 0% APR and no required advance fees, but unlike many cash advance apps, it requires you to open a new account. If you already bank elsewhere and want to stay put, it’s worth comparing alternatives.

How we picked theseWhat is the Finder Score?
The Finder Score crunches 3+ types of short-term loans across 65+ lenders. It takes into account the product's interest rate, fees and features, as well as the type of loan eg investor, variable, fixed rate - this gives you a simple score out of 10.
