The 2017 Lexus IS was given a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The car scored five stars, the highest rating, on the side crash test and the rollover test by the NHTSA. The Lexus IS also scored four stars for the frontal crash test. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) only rated the moderated overlap front test, side impact test and the roof strength test. The IIHS gave the highest rating for all tests performed on the Lexus IS.

The latest model of the Lexus IS include overhead airbags, side impact airbags and antilock brakes.

The Lexus IS has been around since 1998 and is currently in its third generation. The small luxury car is known for its smooth ride, strong engine options and long list of standard driver assistance features. In 2016, there were over 37,000 sales in the United States. The Lexus IS ranked first place in the J.D. Power car satisfaction survey, in 2011.
