How can I get the best exchange rate between the US dollar and the CFP franc?

The CFP franc is the name of the currency used by French overseas territories including French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Wallis and Fortuna. Although US dollars are sometimes accepted as payment on these Pacific islands, it’s recommended to use local currency as much as possible to get a better exchange rate.

For those traveling to Tahiti in French Polynesia, you’ll find the best exchange rate for cash at the airport or downtown in Papeete. Generally, exchanges rates between USD and XPF will be much better in Tahiti than anywhere in the US.

Using an online money transfer service is a smart choice if you’re looking to send money to someone in French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Wallis and Fortuna because of the competitive exchange rates and low fees — typically better than what banks offer.

What affects exchange rates between the US dollar and the CFP franc?

Due to the CFP franc being pegged to the euro at a fixed rate, the exchange rate between US dollars and CFP francs follows the exchange rate between US dollars and euros.

The euro is the second largest currency in the world by trading volume, only behind the US dollar. Since currencies are always traded in pairs, meaning that to buy one currency you have to sell another, the dollar and the euro together make up the world’s most traded currency pair. The exchange rate between the two currencies can be influenced by a range of different economic and political factors.

In particular, interest rates in both the US and EU, as well as economic growth in both regions can tremendously affect the exchange rate between the two currencies.
