Xbox One could be getting “shrinkable” games
The latest system update hints at a dynamic compression system for Xbox One games.
The keen-eyed user Skyline Owl over at NeoGAF has spotted an intriguing new option in the preview version of the latest Xbox One system update. In the management section of the games library, a category for “shrinkable games” has been added, suggesting that future Xbox One titles may support compression of some kind to reduce their disk usage.
While no games show up in the section yet, the page notes that “When you have games on this Xbox that can shrink while staying playable, you’ll see them here”.
Given how much bigger games are going to get with the introduction of 4K textures for the upcoming Xbox One X, a technique for reducing game size makes a lot of sense. Here’s hoping it saves those of us with limited data caps from blowing through our monthly allowances so often.
In other Microsoft news, a new Shadowrun game could be on its way to Xbox One, and Forza is getting a Supercars esports tournament.
