Soul preview

Soul revolves around Joe Gardner, voiced by Jamie Foxx, a middle-school band teacher with a passion for jazz.

On the brink of getting his big break playing for a jazz quartet, Joe finds himself on an unexpected detour from the streets of New York to The Great Before, a magical place where new souls get their personalities before they go to Earth. Once there, he is tasked with helping a new soul (Tina Fey) find her spark before they can both head to the real world.

Described as a touching and funny tale of friendship and self-discovery, Soul features jazz compositions and arrangements by globally renowned musician and Grammy nominee Jon Batiste and an original score by Oscar winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. It was written and directed by Pete Docter, also responsible for the wonder that is Inside Out.

The movie premiered at the BFI London Film Festival back in October to excellent reviews. It currently has a 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising it as a “stunning, highly imaginative and poignant piece that continues to prove Pixar is one of the boldest and most innovative animation studios out there”.

If Pixar’s history is any indication, the animation will be top-notch and the story memorable and heartwarming. Also, what better time to watch a movie about the meaning of life than around the holidays?
