Student discounts explained

Want to know if you qualify for student discount? We can help.

Beautiful teenage girls shopping for clothes.

Living off instant noodles, writing 10,000-word essays and living in a draughty house where no one washes up – being a student can be tough.

But there are a few notable perks that make it all worthwhile, namely student discounts (and hopefully, a good qualification at the end of it all).

Student discounts are typically generous and help you save on things you might otherwise struggle to afford.

If you’re looking for student discount codes, we’ve got plenty to choose from further down the page.

What is a student discount and how can I get one?

Student discounts are special savings offered to students. Some discounts include high school students, but most are for students at universities, community colleges or other places of higher education.

When shopping in person, you only need to flash your student ID to receive a store discount. If you’re more of an online shopper, promo codes can be added to your online basket just as easily.

UNiDAYS, Student Beans, NUS Extra and Amazon are the main student discount providers to look out for. They cover a wide variety of retailers offering everything from gym gear to pizza, at discounted prices.

Student Beans logo
Student Beans is a free digital student discount card that will give you access to savings and discounts on top brands via your laptop or phone. It’s very similar to UNiDAYS, although it often features different retailers. As long as your uni is signed up to the scheme, you’ll be able to sign up with Student Beans. All you have to do is register and verify your student status to get a desired discount. What’s more, you don’t have to be 18 or over.
Unidays logo
This app is free to join but to get student status, you’ll need to register and verify your account with details from your university. The discounts on offer come from hundreds of retailers and restaurants, meaning you’re spoilt for choice! To use in-store, all you need to do is show your UNiDAYS pass on the app. If you’re shopping online, simply add your promo code to your order at the checkout. With UNiDAYS you’ll also get access to student-only promotions and events, including in-store launch parties and UNiDAYS blogger events.
Amazon Student logo
Amazon Prime Student can be used for four years, or until you graduate, whichever comes first. Perks include free two-day shipping, unlimited streaming of thousands of movies and TV shows in the first six months, unlimited photo storage, exclusive deals and discounts from major brands and retailers, access to Twitch Prime and so on. To use Amazon Prime Student, you must have a university-approved email and be enrolled in at least one college or university course.
nus totum logo
The name may be different but the discounts are exactly the same. To reap the rewards of NUS discounts, you’ll need to buy a card which costs £12 for 12 months, £22 for 2 years or £32 for 3 years. You must be 16 or over, in full- or part-time education and your course has to have started before you apply. Need a wardrobe refresh? Now you can get one, with 50% off deals on clothes and products. Or, if you want to treat that special person in your life to dinner, no problem. You can also get 2 for 1 deals from around 5,000 restaurants across the UK.
isic uk logo
ISIC UK is perhaps the most different kind of student discount available. As the only internationally accepted proof of student status in the world, with an ISIC student, youth or teacher card you’ll have access to over 150,000 discounts globally, which include major retailers such as Apple. You can order your card online or at one of the issuing offices in the UK. You’ll need to have a passport-style photo, proof of your identity and student status. The price of a Virtual ISIC card is £12 for 12 months or £15 if you prefer having a plastic card.
